Living and teaching in Cambodia for a (NOOB) :-)
Hello all,
I'm new to this board but not to teaching. I have a few questions and hope you guys will be able to provide me with some answers.
I taught English in Thailand for 5 years. And worked for various language schools over there. I have a T.E.F.L certificate but no degree. I'm studying for a degree by distance so in the next few years I should have it. Hopefully
Ok here's my questions...
1. Is it easy to get work in PP at government high schools / private language schools?
2. Can I pick up a one year business visa at the Cambodian embassy in Bangkok?
3.With this one year visa, I don't need a work permit?
4.How much will I be earning a month, on a typical government school gig?
5.Is it easy to find an apartment to rent? Nothing too flashy for me.
6.How much will an apartment set me back per month?
7.Is it dangerous in pp especially after dark?
8.Are there any well known Cambodian scams a Noob should be wary of?
9.Can I get high speed internet in my apartment?
10.What's it like teaching in a Cambodian high school in general?
11. Is it easy to find employment?
12.Is it a place you can lay down roots, or just a short stay teach destination?
Well I think that's about all. Thanks in advance guys. 8)

Yes very and often you can start the same day. You'll be working for private schools though as government high schools don't employ foreign ESL teachers.1. Is it easy to get work in PP at government high schools / private language schools?
Correct3.With this one year visa, I don't need a work permit?
Zero (see above) but for a private school teaching General English, maybe $800 -$1200 pm4.How much will I be earning a month, on a typical government school gig?
It's getting more expensive - what was $150 is now $250 etc - but you should get a simple one bed self contained centrally located apartment for $200 - $250.5.Is it easy to find an apartment to rent? Nothing too flashy for me.
See above6.How much will an apartment set me back per month?
If you get drunk and go looking for trouble - very. Otherwise no. IMHO far safer than London, NYC etc7.Is it dangerous in pp especially after dark?
See out Camboidia Q and A forum, Scambodia section.8.Are there any well known Cambodian scams a Noob should be wary of?
Easily - for $300 plus per month9.Can I get high speed internet in my apartment?
Will answer the other questions later.

No, you can pick up a one month one, and renew it when you are here for periods up to a year. Id just get the visa on entry, no point wasting time going to embassies, unless you are from Sri Lanka or one of the other countries that can't get visa on entry.2. Can I pick up a one year business visa at the Cambodian embassy in Bangkok?
Who Gives a Fuck?

1st time because I didn't realise.
2nd time I had to because I only had one page left in my passport and virtually no space anywhere for an exit stamp from Thailand. Thus, using up the last page for Camb. visa forced the Thai immigration to find a tiny space somewhere in the middle of the passport.
so, there was a reason after all.

Yeah, the MPTC are blocking people laying down lines and heavily taxing/restricting access to ht e existing ones.hanky wrote:Im not certain, but I think its because the Ministry of Telecommunications are a bunch of fuckiing robbers. Why's the internet more expensive? 300 dollars per month.
Currently $300 per month will get you unlimited 24/7 access at 256kps ADSL or 512kps Wi-Fi. The ISP's will end up giving about half of that to the MPTC.
