Teaching in English in places other than PP
Teaching in English in places other than PP
Hi there
I have been to Cambodia and absolutely loved it there. I am finalising my degree at the moment and am keen to come back to teach English. I really loved Sihanoukville and would be keen to live down there for a bit. Only problem is, it seems fairly small so I assume the teaching opportunities are minimal. Am I way off base here or is this true? Is the pay the same as PP or less?
I don't mind if I have to live in PP - I liked it there as well but Sihanoukville would be great.
Also, I am not a backpacker calling through for a few months. I intend to stay for a number of years, perhaps even permenently.
Thanks for the help.
Cheers

I answered a couple of your queries in on the teaching FAQ's posted earlier this month; you'll find these articles in the teaching section of the main site. Home of English have a branch in Snooky and there are other schools there as well. A.C.E. have a branch in Batambang if you feel like really getting away from it all.

Briefly.
NO, the rates of pay and opportunities are not the same.
You will not get paid what you are worth.
Living in Sihnaoukville is a lifestyle choice. I cant speak for the positives, cos I find it positively boring after 1 week there, and I would probably get a drug or alcohol addiction.
The only good place for pay is Phnom Penh. Period.

Seuss is half right.
Pay in the provinces can be lower but there again, living costs are lower.
I recently heard of a job in Battambang where the deal was $1000pm for a 15 hour week......up there you'd probably save about $600 of that every month.
Personally, I couldn't live in Snooky; it has a reputation for driving people potty. Expats move there and gradually, quietly go quite mad.

Bullshit DS.
In Battambang there are two schools that offer the $10 a week that you can find in PP and sometimes more. That adds up to being able to earn $1000 a month which I think most in PP consider afairly livable wage.
The schools are ACD (the spinoff from ACE) and SITC.
ACD have paid $10 in their schools in Pursat and Sisophon too. I would imagine there are some English schools in Siem Reap that pay in the $10 range. You can be paid okay in the provinces it is just a question of find the opportunity there.
Not the oracle you might think you are.

Jesus VOX.. take it easy .... you've got issues if you've got to speak like that to someone.Vox Clamantis wrote:Bullshit DS.

I am no oracle, and I am not wrong. If I am wrong.. I have no problem being the first to admit it. But I am not wrong.
Despite the title of her post, after reading Rachels post I interpreted it as merely asking for the options in Snooky and Phnom Penh, and a comparison of the two towns against each other.
She asked for the differences between Snooky and Phnom Penh, which I have accurately provided. You WILL not find the same rates of pay AND hours available in Snooky.. PERIOD... not teaching English at a school anyway.
Pull your head in Vox, and learn how to interact with people in a normal fashion. This is a discussion forum, not a boxing ring.
You may be right about the provinces you mentioned, Ive never been there, so I wouldn't know. I've never actually considered teaching as an option in Battambang, and I am surprised to hear what you said about it. I've researched Sisaphon before and never found those rates you spoke of.. but would happily live there as the place is beautiful.
You are incorrect about Siem Reap however, as maximum hourly rate available there is $8 an hour.
I detect you have some heat blowing out my way VOX.. whats with that???
You don't have to be so reactionary and volatile mon frere, we are here to help each other remember, not cause friction.
Take a chill pill or something.
Yeah possibly... maybe we all are a little. Where are you staying now Vox?Expats move there and gradually, quietly go quite mad
Perhaps so but maybe not you see that provokes the question - where they mad already before moving to Snookville?
<please insert "This is serious" SIGN here>
Thanks to everyone that has replied. I didn't realise such a simple question would get so heated!
I think the best information I have picked up from this is that I may actually go batty myself living somewhere that is so laid back and yes, probably boring after a while. If truth be known I would probably end up drinking too much but I don't know if I would avoid that in PP either!
Cheers....

If "Bullshit" and "oracle" (something of a play on an earlier comment from Playboy) really upset you "mon frere", then I apologise. I can't say I am a mindreader so I was responding to the below comment.

I will ignore your comments about "boxing rinks" etc. I am very familiar with them as I was a mid-light heavyweight and once fought Buster Douglas over a Krispy Kreme (insert "I AM NOT SERIOUS sign here!)
As for Siem Reap. If you hadn't noticed, I said "I would imagine there are some English schools in Siem Reap that pay in the $10 range." By imagining something I was not certain. I might "imagine" that you are a prick, but that doesn't mean you are. You might well be a very good bloke.
Sisophon has a branch of ACD which pays, I believe, $10 an hour to an expat who works there. I would agree that the surrounding countryside is beautiful but not the town itself! But then again, "one man's mutton..."

When one writes long <insert 'boring/semi-interesting'> posts and offers opinions on just about anything and everything, it can get more than a little tedious.Doctor Seuss wrote:[ Pull your head in Vox, and learn how to interact with people in a normal fashion. DS: isn't it more polite to suggest how people might do something other than tell them? Isn't this the normal fashion you were suggesting? It's comments like yours above that get people's backs up.
Nobody likes a know-it-all.
Might I further suggest you get out more. Merely talking about life is not the same as having one, and I get the distinct impression that you are on some sort of power trip here. It's as if you put on your super-hero costume and actually become someone other than the boring non-entity you might otherwise be.

Well, thats your perception, and you are entitled to it. Thank you for sharing it with me.dreamer#1 wrote:Might I further suggest you get out more. Interesting how you can tell so much, and make so many assumptions and judgements, all based from a chat forum!!
This is further proof that you can indeed get to know some one quite intimately from the internet.
Thank you for your oh-so-interesting opinions Dreamer Number 1 (apt name.. Number 1... khmers would piss themselves laughing). I really value them, and in the future I hope you can share more of your observations with me.
