English teaching in Cambodia
English teaching in Cambodia
OVERVIEW
Cambodian English Schools are the best in the world. There are hundreds of positions available. Most of the schools are on the lookout for English teachers. You are able to secure a high paid job in a couple of hours. Nearly all English schools providing health and accident insurance for English teachers and a 4 week paid holiday is mandatory.
SOLUTION
English Teachers are in short supply in Cambodia. The Cambodian government is supporting TV spots in foreign countries, to attract Teachers. Specially sought after are English teachers from African countries, or Ukraine, Russia, Greece, Japan or Maoris from New Zealand.
COST OF LIVING
Of course, it depends on many factors; therefore, I will give you some hints, to figure it out for yourself (all figures are for a month). A decent apartment with air-condition, cable TV and furniture will cost you $ 50 to 100, a Maid $ 10, transport (subway, sky train) $ 5, Visa $ 10, Food (spiders, cockroaches or green tomatoes) $ 12 to $ 20, laundry $ 2-3, entertainment $ 5 to 10 (throwing 50 Riel notes from the FCC balcony to the beggars on the street), miscellaneous (buying faked penicillin against gonorrhea or diarrhea) $ 5 to 10. The total cost would be $ 89 and 20 Cent to $ 168.
SMALL SCHOOLS…
The wage in these kinds of schools is $ 10 an hour and many foreigners are working here. All of these schools are air-conditioned. Well known is the school chain NEWTON THILAY who providing English Teachers with company cars. NEW YORK SCHOOL is a similar case, with numerous branches. Very good opportunity for English Teachers with a limited knowledge of English
MEDIUM SCHOOLS
One-step higher are the medium sized English schools, payment is $ 13 to $ 17. Most of these schools have their own restaurants for their teachers. Western food is available, including steaks, seafood, and very reasonably priced ($ 1). These schools have lots of teachers from Russia, Sudan, Algeria, Israel and Palestine.
CHAIN SCHOOLS
ISTC and APIS are the bigger English Schools, known as chain or factory schools. The offered wage is between $ 18-25. These are very fine English Schools; however, most of them have problems finding English teachers. ISTC has a free swimming pool on top of their building. On weekends, the school organizes free karaoke sessions for teachers. These are very good schools for the novice Teacher.
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS
If you’re having a degree (from Kao San Road is ok) than these schools are for you. The payment is $ 30-35/hour and of course a nice company car, usually a Lexus or BMW. Northern Bridge, one of the top international schools even owns a Lear Jet. The use of the company jet is free of charge. Employed teachers are sometimes flying over the weekend to Singapore for shopping. Rolex, Gucci watches or designer shirts for $ 250 – the world is our oyster.
BEHIND THE CURTAIN/FACTS
All schools providing you with a return airplane ticket to your home country once a year.
All schools are paying for your Visa
Accommodation is paid by the school, usually a 2-bedroom apartment with air-condition, cable TV and a fridge.
Some of the schools have swimming pools and gyms, free of charge of course
Prostitution is against the law in Cambodia and there are no Prostitutes in Phnom Penh
If you find a local girlfriend, be warned, it is against the law to have sex with an over aged girl
Degrees or other certificates (TEFL, CELTA) are not necessary to start your teaching career in PP (except in International Schools)
Khmers in Phnom Penh are usually very poor and transport is mainly by bicycle. Land Cruisers or other luxurious cars are non-existent, because all the foreign aid is going into the countryside.
Foreign NGO’s (Non-government organizations) are usually living in bamboo huts and working 12 to 14 hours a day. NGO’s have very low salaries ($10-20 a month); please donate as much as you can to their organizations. If you don’t know their bank account number, just drop me a line, and I will send you my account number. As soon as the money is on my account, I will give it to your desired NGO personally.
If you hear somebody was going home with a “Taxi Girl” and you don’t know what it means, I will clarify that for you. A “Taxi Girl” is a female Taxi driver, so a female driver had driven your friend home. OK?
There is no Corruption in Cambodia, the last case was in the year 1876, since then, everything is fine.

Yet another post from a jaded non english speaker.. yet this one seems to have a twist...perhaps of a yamma-addicted paranoia induced specimen....
Anyone looking for advice could do well to ignore this whole article. There are so MANY things totally wrong in it , that it does not even warrant individual dissection....
CAMERAS?????

The supposed facts you quote are quite ludicrous.
ACE a factory school?
SITC not paying for months?
I've no reason to defend either of the above places but you are simply talking garbage about them.
Adverts for jobs in the Daily being the CIA or IJM?
Earth to Bluemoon.....we've lost our connection. You're spinning out on us.

Thank you very much for all the constructive posts you made, especially Mr. Paul_Pot, you’re a very diplomatic, intelligent man. However, I couldn’t understand what the word ‘cunt’ means. Is that your Surname? I’m sure I know you; your first name is ‘stupid’, isn’t it? STUPID CUNT – now I’m remembering you. Somebody told me, you lived in Thailand before, and all the bargirls called you ‘Kee nock’ (Shit bird) or ‘Kee naa’ (Shit face). Why did you change your name? Shit bird or Shit face are really nice names for you.
As you can see above, I corrected some mistakes; I hope the description of the schools is now much more accurate.

Washington DC School in Toul Tompong, Phnom Penh is known for paying staff late or not at all. If the directors and management staff have no education, training and/or experience in the field that they are running, it is a good hint that there is going to be problems.

You've made three posts now bashing this school. Do you have a personal story you want to share?

1. Bluemoon is a NES masquerading as a NNS but the pose is implausible; this is not recognizable
Filipino ""Caribou English" or Igbo Coon-talk.
2. The text is intentionally hilarious and full of grotesque nonsense, like the Molvania travel guide published a few years ago.
3. Every literate NES would have readily grasped the two points above. Those who failed to do should consider suicide.

In the 4 months they have been open, they have cheated 4 teachers out of their salaries as well as, problems paying the Khmer staff. I will spread the word where I can to defer others from getting screwed by them because my embassy won't help, Police and Ministry of Labor won't either, but maybe someone will read my posts who knows them. In the end, it is the students that are being hurt the most.
