' They have threatened to yank my visa, jail me, and accuse me of being a Yabba user. I have NEVER used yabba.'
Go to the labour department. If this is an NGO, they have more reason to be scared of you than you have to be scared of them. NGOs are on shaky ground right now.
By law, they HAVE to give you a certificate of service. Nail them. They have no authority to threaten you with jail, and in fact they might be in serious trouble for pretending to have this authority. Hanky?

Dude, I'm sorry you've had such a shitty experience. You'd hope that your efforts'd be more appreciated, but this is what happens at times. Welcome to Asia.
You will read in other threads how local managers in general don't really appreciate input from lower levels, however well meant.
It doesn't sound to me like the man would have the power to live up to his threats. In the meantime you should post this story in more detail on Lonely Planet, volunteering sites, and what not. Just to get a bit of your frustration out of the way and perhaps save an innocent soul.
If you want to continue volunteering, I'm sure some people on this site can point you in the right direction. In the meantime, I'm setting up my own volunteer-teaching scam, charging wellmeaning backpackers shitloads of money to do something they could easily sort out themselves. Gotta get my share!

Let's get this straight, you come here, try to impose your countries standards, then have a hissy fit over a piece of paper?
Thought the warm fuzzy feeling from helping others was it's own reward for dogooders
You sound like a sh*tdisturber that has received his/her just deserts.

If you had suggested getting volunteers to pay for and put in new stairs, things might have worked out.
Seems a bit extreme for requesting new stairs and failing to organize a mass blood donation. I doubt it will be carried through as jailing former volunteers is bad PR.willyluv wrote: After all is said and done, the Director refused to give me a certificate of effective volunteer teaching for 200+ hours, I have spent over $5000 to teach the Khmer people as a volunteer - which I thoroughly enjoyed - and now they say that I have violated workplace laws in Cambodia. They have threatened to yank my visa, jail me, and accuse me of being a Yabba user. I have NEVER used yabba.
This route seems best.Sok Poupe wrote: It doesn't sound to me like the man would have the power to live up to his threats. Instead of name and shame that org of one too many greed/corrupted organsisation in Cambodia. Why not help out the OP question:
MissTara also run an NGO, you might to send her a pm.
I can suggest an orphanage village in Siem Reap http://www.newhopecambodia.com/index.php but I can no longer vouch their sincerity.Any suggestions for a barang who is happily elsewhere with a new wife, trying to find happiness?

To the OP, are you saying Sambo threatened to do all these things to you? If so, I don't believe a word of it. Also how did you spend over $5000 when they only charge you for food and accommodation?
@ Flying Chicken, who said:

Better off going to talk to ConCERT for volunteering advice in Siem Reap: http://www.concertcambodia.org

I checked out conversations with foreigners about two years ago.
I thought that they expected too much commitment for nothing but then again i am a lazy prick.
The OP sounds genuine to me.
I would suggest that he posts his story on other sites.
I must say that I would not give blood because i worry about needles.
Stupid really when i consider my unsafe behaviour over the last few months.
When the good doctor suggested the AIDs test I started counting the partners, lost count at fifteen.

The idea of non slip anything is pretty foreign to Cambodia. The stairs at the school, and every staircase in Cambodia, would benefit from some 3M grip tape or similar.willyluv wrote:I had problems with the adminstration re: safety issuses at the school - a fellow teacher slipped on steep steps in the four-floor buiding and cracked her head. I suggested non-slip skids on the leading edge of the steps to correct the problem.
How or why did this contribute to you being asked to leave? It didn't. Mentioning it here only serves to make you look like a good guy.
Whilst this is indeed tragic, donating anything is a purely personal decision. To consider promoting blood donations in future would indicate that management considered it a good idea, but who knows why no one donated blood. Perhaps no one had a suitable blood type? The other problem I had concerned a blood drive for a 10-year old Khmer girl dying of Leukemia in a very depressing ward at Kuntac Bopha. The story was related to me me via a student's writing journal (an idea instituted by me as a way to improve their English skills). She made a plea to me to help her dying niece, give her a few more days with her loved ones. The girl died last weel. Not to toot my horn, but I was the only one to give blood. None of the other volunteer teachers would, none of CWF's staff would, and none of the students. However, the Director claims to want to institute blood drives in the future as an effective PR campaign...
What others will or will not donate is again completely irrelevant to your criticisms of the school.
I wasn't present, but I highly doubt they would verbally threaten you with arrest or revoking your visa, even if they were in a position to do so. That said, you entered the country on a business visa at their invitation, so your actions in the country will reflect directly on the school. It is in their own interests to disassociate themselves from you, and I'm sure they've taken appropriate steps to protect themselves. After all is said and done, the Director refused to give me a certificate of effective volunteer teaching for 200+ hours, I have spent over $5000 to teach the Khmer people as a volunteer - which I thoroughly enjoyed - and now they say that I have violated workplace laws in Cambodia. They have threatened to yank my visa, jail me, and accuse me of being a Yabba user. I have NEVER used yabba.
Hmmm...
As to the accusations of being on Yabba, again I doubt Sambo would make such accusations with genuine cause, but I'm not in a position to verify what was or wasn't said. I genuinely hope that you aren't.
So you had two problems with the school, but fail to mention any of the far more serious problems the school had with you.
Given the true reasons for you being asked to leave and being denied a certifcate for your contribution, I'm very surprised to see this thread. What you have posted here is purely malicious, and omits the real reasons for CWF's actions.
While it's not my place to disclose any information regarding your actions and behaviour, I would encourage you, willyluv, to do so in the interests of honesty and accuracy. Posting here as 'the good guy' is wholly disingenuous, and I sincerely hope you aren't posting similar stories on other forums.
In my opinion, there were several instances where your actions and behaviour towards staff, students and other volunteers would result in outright instant dismissal from any job in any western country. I'm not aware of the details of Cambodian workplace laws, but malicious misuse of staff computers would surely be covered.
Disclosure: I have been associated with CWF as a volunteer and supporter for the past 9 months.
Taking responsibility for the repercussion of your own actions would be a start, but I do sincerely hope you have found some happiness down by the sea.Any suggestions for a barang who is happily elsewhere with a new wife, trying to find happiness?

But not writing a certificate? Is that the done thing?
Don't bang me now, I'm not involved in any way. I just thought Willy had been posting reasonable stuff.

In all honesty, there was a certificate prepared, and I actually thought he had received it.SunSan wrote:But not writing a certificate? Is that the done thing?

Management and the Board obviously have their reasons, none of which should surprise the OP.
