First post, need info regarding teaching
The last few posts have been very funny!
As with Violet, I don't baby sit my passport at all. U can find it lying around my apartment, or randomly in a backpack I took my last trip in.
As far as a secure home, that it very important. Use common sense when checking out a place. See if u could break in. I can't tell u how many times I've traveled with people and they just seem clueless about security. One buddy was walking out with his camer/laptop visible from the window.
"What are u doing?" I say
"i locked the door" he say
I reached in through the window and turned the knob and unlocked it...duhhh...
And yes, atms are the way to go here.

This will probably depend on your contacts, but if you want to open a new account here, you'll likely need at least a 6 month visa along with proof of income (a letter from your employer or some proof of enterprise should suffice).Dan21 wrote:Yeah I thought'd i do that, but how accessable is your money, would you use an ATM in sCambodia or always withdraw from the branch itself? Do banks offer a safety deposit box, or should I just not accept any accomidation without a safe and good sturdy doors and bars on the windows lol?
ATMs are fine to use. No difference here to most other countries. Branches are easily accessible if you want to go that route.
As for theft, I haven't had any problem with theft from an apartment in Cambodia. Most rooms will have bars on the doors and windows. Just keep your valuables out of sight. That includes things like keys (duh) and even small denominations of cash. I think the biggest thing is to be able to trust your landlord/lady as they will likely have spare keys for your place. Again, normal.
If you intend to rent a moto, you'll need to give them your passport (unless you want to lay down a minimum of $700 deposit). Personally, I wouldn't bother. Just buy a bike and sell it on when you decide to leave. Unless you're happy with motos and tuk-tuks. If you don't rent a moto, stashing your passport in your room shouldn't be a problem. As has already been said, they aren't high on the list of desired loot.

Yeah, seems sensible to me. I guess some CELTAs are better than othersviolet wrote:My CELTA reviewed grammar as well as showing how to teach it.Eturnal Youf wrote:Anyway, trying to drag this back on track!
I guess even with CELTAs there are going to be different methods applied here or there. One big difference that appears to have arisen here is that with the TEFL I took, they review grammar whilst they show you how to teach it. Cambod's CELTA didn't touch on grammar. So, if you choose the CELTA and your grammar isn't so great, maybe you should get to grips with basic to intermediate level stuff before you start.

Good info. My house was burgled here once. I broke ur "keep ute valuables out of sight" rule. Also, my place wasn't secure. All they did was lift a tile in my ceiling up... They put bars up AFTER it happened, lol...Eturnal Youf wrote:This will probably depend on your contacts, but if you want to open a new account here, you'll likely need at least a 6 month visa along with proof of income (a letter from your employer or some proof of enterprise should suffice).Dan21 wrote:Yeah I thought'd i do that, but how accessable is your money, would you use an ATM in sCambodia or always withdraw from the branch itself? I know a guy who left his house keys on the coffee table.... Suffice it to say, he woke up to an empty house and no moto.
I mentioned small denominations because if somebody sees anything at all, it's an invitation to try to gain entry. You think leaving a 100 riel note on the table is ok because it's only 100 riel. A thief will see a note and endeavor to see what else is lying around. It's all just encouragement to enter.

So, cambod, do tell, where ARE you hiding the 40" flat screen when you're out?cambod wrote:Good info. My house was burgled here once. I broke ur "keep ute valuables out of sight" rule. ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.
Haha, I bought that AFTER I moved, lol...vladimir wrote:So, cambod, do tell, where ARE you hiding the 40" flat screen when you're out?cambod wrote:Good info. My house was burgled here once. The funny thing is that I physically TRAPPED the thief on the top floor of the building 2 days later, and made the landlord call the police. The police gave me more of a hard time because I didn't have a picture with my passport copy I have to my landlord, yet the thief that "lived" there had nothing on him. The police yelled at the thief, and told us, "if he admits it, call us back and we'll take him to jail."
Then left. With the thief just sitting there.
I asked my landlord, "Now what? Can I kick his ass or what?"
"You're not supposed to," as they smiled... But I did anyways. A few punches, kicked his head against the cement wall a few times, then threw him down the stairs as his flip-flops went flying off. Luckily he wasn't too banged up to b-line down the block at the speed of light. I even got a funny pic to post of him, lol...
(for the record, i didn't lose much, and I later heard that the reason the police left was because my landlord told the cop he wasn't gonna pay anything, even after he told me he would)
Again the thief had my apartment and another apartment that he could get in easily, but we assume mine was targeted because i'd often leave small amounts of cash lying around and visible from my barred window...
I lost up to $200 cash spread out in small denominations, old ipod, 2 old phones (including a blackberry), camera, and an old watch. They left my obvious laptop sitting out, didn't touch my books (lol) or open my huge luggage under my bed, BUT u could tell they rummaged through my clothes looking for (presumably) cash stashes. They also left all my harddrives, memory sticks alone. There wasn't a single 100 riel note to be found though..
I like to think I paid $500 to use him as a punching/kicking bag for a few minutes. I've spent money on dumber things! ;-D
I was living in a nice (but small) studio apartment fully furnished (bed, wardrobe, tv/w cable, a/c, kitchenish sink area) and it was $100 a month. And now it has bars all across the ceiling so thieves have to at least try to break in now. Close to Wat Phnom.xtreme wrote:Tell me there are a few highrises in town where shit like this doesn't happen. And tell me the rents there are about $600/USDmonth.
Or is that only in BKK or KL?

You gave the douche bag a beating? I would have done exactly that - and then probably would've been overcome with guilt... his flip flops fell off for Christ's sake! You animal!!!
I've only been a victim of much pettier theft or attempts at it, and have often wondered what I'd do if I caught someone 'in the act'.
Reminds me of 2 Canadians living in Tonle Bassac area who were in their bedroom when their flat was looted one night - they woke up, and decided not to interrupt.... Tough decision, not sure what I'd do in the heat of the moment. They lost everything, passports included, and soon left the country for home.

I hear you. As I'm still in orbit and yet to land, I was wondering if any "reasonably priced" "life in a bubble" highrises exist in PP so as to (hopefully) avoid this kind of mayhem.cambod wrote:I was living in a nice (but small) studio apartment fully furnished (bed, wardrobe, tv/w cable, a/c, kitchenish sink area) and it was $100 a month.
