First post, need info regarding teaching
Hi I'm 21 years old, about to do a 150 hour online TESOL certificate and looking to move to Cambodia for about 4-6 months to practice teaching after I finish the course. I'm just looking for some information for example:
Is it a good starting point?
Is it a relatively safe country? (as I don't believe what I read on some outdated sites)
Can I easily get a job in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap or Sihanoukville?
I've been to Thailand, I didn't think it was the cleanest place in the world but I could easily handle it, is Cambodia a whole lot worse?
And would you suggest it to be a good TEFL starting point? Because it's so hard to find a job without 1 year of teaching experience or a BA online, I'm just wondering if I'm in Cambodia in person if i'll have a higher chance of finding one
I don't want to just go there for the drinking / nightlife but I do love to socialize and go out most nights, what would be the best city to do that, Siem reap or Phnom Penh?
Thanks in advance if you read this.

I just watched Discovery's "How It's Made" and, honestly, I'm never eating another urinal cake again.

Why online? How many hours in (real) classes? Most non-online TEFL courses will give you experience as you study.Dan21 wrote:Hi I'm 21 years old, about to do a 150 hour online TESOL certificate...
Funny old word that; relative. I feel safe here. What are you comparing it to?Dan21 wrote:Is it a relatively safe country? (as I don't believe what I read on some outdated sites)

Worse, but not a whole lot worse.Dan21 wrote:I've been to Thailand, I didn't think it was the cleanest place in the world but I could easily handle it, is Cambodia a whole lot worse?
Yes, easier to find a job if you are here in person.Dan21 wrote:I'm just wondering if I'm in Cambodia in person if i'll have a higher chance of finding one
Haven't spent much time in SR, but I would say PP has more to do. Sihanoukville is also fairly lively at times. Come here and find out for yourself!Dan21 wrote:I don't want to just go there for the drinking / nightlife but I do love to socialize and go out most nights, what would be the best city to do that, Siem reap or Phnom Penh?

Thanks so much for your response
So you recommend an in class TEFL course?
Because I found this one http://teflchiangmai.com/
They used to offer a course in Sihanouk but stopped about 2 weeks ago. But I could do it in Thailand its just I've researched it and I cant find 1 person who's actually done it.
Otherwise there is http://www.onlinetefl.com/tefl-course/
I'm pretty new to this but have been interested since about January last year.
This is the one I was about to start doing: http://tesols.com/courses/
I found a special on a coupon site offering 150 hours online for 79 dollars. I can still get a refund for it.
Goin to bed will check in morning. Thx

I guess it depends on how serious you were about this. I mean, is this just a way to fund your travelling for a few years or could this be the start of a new teaching career? Will you be visiting other countries or is Cambodia it at the moment?
Personally, I would spend a little more on a respected, in-class TEFL/CELTA qualification. The respect given for those globally is well deserved. 150 hours is a good amount of study time but you'll still be lacking those very valuable teaching practices.
I have been thinking though: What do you mean by, "good starting point"?

Be wary of any franchise that uses pretty girls to sell you something that is in no way related to pretty girls. It usually means their product is shit and that this is their way of enticing you.Dan21 wrote:Because I found this one http://teflchiangmai.com/
There must be thousands (??) of TEFL/TESOL/CELTA courses around. I took the SEETEFL course in Chiang Mai, which is highly respected, but I think they are full for a while now. Fantastic course. Most here seem to recommend CELTA. Not really sure what the difference is. IE, not sure what someone with a CELTA got that I didn't with my TEFL. Anyone?

Just a couple of closing thoughts.Dan21 wrote:This is the one I was about to start doing: http://tesols.com/courses/

I checked the site. Who are they accredited by? The answer appears to be; nobody.
And the final thought here is that for $79 I wouldn't be expecting much!
The name "University of Cambridge" on it.Eturnal Youf wrote:, not sure what someone with a CELTA got that I didn't with my TEFL. Anyone?
That is practically where English came from, right? ;-D
I'm sure there's a lot of "space training camps around the world, but I'd want my certificate to say NASA on it.....
For $79usd i'd go ahead and do the online one. At least u will have SOMETHING in ur hand that says that u gave teaching a thought before handing ur CV to some random schools.... It's worth about half that it the tefl world, but it sounds like u just wanna hang out and teach for a while, and if u are white with a usa passport and an online tefl cert u will find something...
Correct me if I'm wrong about my assumptions about ur goal out here....

I asked what you got that I didn't in terms of skills or training. Surely your CELTA equipped you with the skills to understand that?cambod wrote:The name "University of Cambridge" on it.Eturnal Youf wrote:, not sure what someone with a CELTA got that I didn't with my TEFL. Anyone?

And no, Cambridge is not the source of English. There is, however, a prestigious university there! I understand your point, however badly you put it
I was curious if the training and assessment varied at all from a CELTA to, let's say, SEETEFL (or pick any other well accredited and respected certificate). I see people saying how much better CELTAs are but I'm not really sure how to quantify that. Obviously there's the name, but how about the training? Better?
Actually, all the centers (centres?);-) design their own course so they vary widely, they just get the Cambridge Uni stamp of approval. To me, it's the name one should consider when spending $1,300ish on a offline course (unless u have really good reason to think another course is better than the one offered from Cambridge University).Eturnal Youf wrote:I asked what you got that I didn't in terms of skills or training. I would guess the actual training u get is roughly the same as any tefl course that is from a serious institution, but miles (kms?) ahead of the scam courses that are 4 weeks long, and include a 2-week tour of temples and 1 week of teaching, oops, I mean "observed practicing", with kids in some random village for free....

You'll love it here then. Here are a few snaps from around "The Charming CityTM" of Phnom Penh:Dan21 wrote: I've been to Thailand, I didn't think it was the cleanest place in the world but I could easily handle it, is Cambodia a whole lot worse?
One of the pleasant brooks that flow through the city.
There's a restaurant on the other side of this wall, so why not just chuck all the garbage into the lot next door? Sorted.
At one of the markets in the center of town, lots of character and salt-of-the-earth types here.
Colorful housing down at Tonle Bassac.
Relocation site for people from colorful housing, with swimming pool.
Rustic housing scheme.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
