So, I've recently watched Parasite and a Korean series. I had a few Korean students in past years of teaching English to speakers of other languages. I always liked the Koreans and I have more interest in Korea than in China.
Has anyone here ever taught in Korea. We hear all the time about the Chinese teaching market - what's it like in Korea?

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

I taught law at a Korean university for several years, and I also taught some courses for the ministry of justice. And I taught business law, criminology, etc. for a few years at the University of Maryland (on the US army base in Seoul). I got to know many foreign English teachers in Korea over the years, especially after the flood gates opened (when the Korean government started requiring every school to employ native English teachers). Let me know if I can answer any specific questions for you...

Hi wolfcreek
specific questions:
Does Korea have a similar attitude to China when it comes to teachers - strong preference for the USA accents, perhaps preferring people within a specific age range?
Do Korean universities still have English language taught at all universities like you mention?
Is it enough to have a degree (not in English language or an Education degree) and a CELTA to teach there?
How do salaries for English language teachers and living costs compare to Phnom Penh?
Is there much call for private lessons in Korea or for business lessons onsite?
edit to add
do you remember the names of any schools/universities that were more highly regarded than others?

SMOE (basically Seoul public schools) was the best job for those without higher qualifications. Public school positions with decent vacations and easy classes.violet wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 2:30 pmHi wolfcreek

Do Korean universities still have English language taught at all universities like you mention? From memory yes. You also need a relevant MA and be able to apply locally.
Is it enough to have a degree (not in English language or an Education degree) and a CELTA to teach there? In the ROK, yes.
How do salaries for English language teachers and living costs compare to Phnom Penh? Check Dave's ESL Cafe for current salaries. Accommodation is generally supplied. I was earning approx 2.6 million won but I think they have come down over the years. I found the cost of living to be very reasonable.
Is there much call for private lessons in Korea or for business lessons onsite? There were. It depends where you are based.

If I may. I taught for 2 years in Seoul, a year in a language school and a year in an after school program at a public school in the affluent Bundang suburb.
Hi Violet,
To answer your quetions:
Does Korea have a similar attitude to China when it comes to teachers - strong preference for the USA accents, perhaps preferring people within a specific age range? Yes, to some extent. Young, female, white, blonde, North American (US or Canada) will often have an advantage. (but not necessarily)
Do Korean universities still have English language taught at all universities like you mention? Yes
Is it enough to have a degree (not in English language or an Education degree) and a CELTA to teach there? Yes, although most universities in Seoul will now require 2+ years of prior university teaching experience.
How do salaries for English language teachers and living costs compare to Phnom Penh? University salaries range from approx 2,000 USD - 3,500 USD per month. Teacher and university both contribute to national health insurance and pension. Some universities provide apartment. Most teachers teach 12-15 hours per week. Paid summer and winter vacations generally(approx 10 weeks each). Some things cost same as Cambodia, but in general many things are more expensive in Korea.
Is there much call for private lessons in Korea or for business lessons onsite? Generally you can find enough privates to fill your free time, especially if you are fun, likeable and/or have some special knowledge (for example, I have taught lots of lawyers, judges and prosecutors).
do you remember the names of any schools/universities that were more highly regarded than others? In what regard do you mean? student regard? treatment of foreign teachers?
I suggest you join the university foreign professors in KoreaFacebook page in order to get more specific info
