I was over in PP a couple of weeks ago and got a Metphone card for my Google Nexus 1 - the t-mobile version which operates on 2G Network frequencies GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 and 3G Networks on HSDPA 900 / 1700 / 2100 but I could only get edge speed. Perhaps I didn't set the card up properly or perhaps the phone operates on the wrong frequency.

Anyone have any knowledge on technical aspects such as this?

Im moving to PP in the next couple of weeks and 3G would be preferable to edge speeds.

In Thailand all of the 3G packages only provide 3 to 5 Gbytes at 3G speed per month and then are speed shaped to 384kbps for the rest of the month. Is this the same in Cambodia?

Thanks.

The 5USD sims will give you 1- 2gig. But you can renew as soon as you've reached the limit. Beware if you continue going online after reaching the limit. Normal download rates then apply and your credit will disappear pdq.

Normally you should get 3G, in towns anyway. Is your configuration maybe not done properly?

Thanks very much for the reply.

It could be that the phone wasn't set up properly, but when I changed from 2G to 3G it received nothing so therefore I'm wondering if the frequency Metfone operates on is compatible, or whether I shuld be looking at a different carrier.

In the US there are two models of the Google Nexus 1 - one for AT&T and the other for T-mobile.

The T-mobile variant operates on GSM 850 MHz, 900 MHz 1800 MHz 1900 MHz and 3G Networks on 900 MHz, AWS, and 2100 MHz
compared to the AT&T variant with GSM 850 MHz, 900 MHz 1800 MHz 1900 MHz and 3G Networks 850 MHz, 1900 MHz, and 2100 MHz.

In Thailand AIS - which operates on the T-mobile 3G frequencies delvers good speed on 3G though after 5Gbytes at Bt962 / $30.84 the speed is shaped to 384 kbps, while dtac who operate on the AT&T frequencies is barely able to get over 100 kbps on their edge package and often is in single digit and more commonly in the sub-50kbps territory.

When you arrive, take your phone into a Metfone Help Centre, a company store, in other words. I have Mobitel. All problems solved in one visit. I use an iPhone 4 with $5/month data/voice plan. Still on my first month.

Just got a subscription with Online.
Optic Fiber, 2MB up/down, $149 per month with free installation and free modem. Wifi router costs $40. I think it's a good deal. Connection seems stable and speedy till now.

The internet speeds in Thailand are actually about the same as here, the only difference is that their IXP is much better at caching and have have far more users filling that cache and keeping it up to date. Try using True Internet to remote into a server you own and download original content. You will see that you're lucky to get 1Mbps with similar latency to here. The reality in Thailand is that 95%+ of traffic never leaves the Thai intranet it's just picking content from local proxy servers at the ISP & IXP.

Cambodia's internet will never be as good as Thailand's, it simply boils down to too few users filling the cache and economies of scale.

I think Online will give you 1MB for about 60 bucks. Have a look at the Ezecom website, they list their prices.
So far I'm getting 2.5MB Down + 15MB (!) Up for my symmetrical 2MB plan. If only it could be the other way round lol.

What cheap and easy to use internet would you recommend I use when at home?
I use wifi when I go out so will only need small data packages at low speeds when at home- torrents can wait.

Currently I use a Smart sim but it's a hassle. Typing in codes to deposit, transfer and check my balance. Then having money confiscated because of some deadline or losing the regular credit in the blink of an eye because it auto switches from the exchange account. I'm fed up with it.

I need a fast internet connection and the ADSL and Emaxx fiber especially seem expensive. What about the 3G+ or 4G Aircards from Smart or other mobile carriers? Is it fast?

I use Skype, web conferencing, VOIP.

Thank you,
