IMO the best bus company is Mekong Express, ive never had a problem with them and they rarely, if at all stop off a long the way picking up more people, ive used them around cambodia and to vietnam many times, bit of free food and water, good service, decent bus with toilet, bring your mp3 player along though, trust me.

Hey,
Can you drive a motorcycle/scooter without a driving license? Secondly, would you advise it?
If it is ok, what is easier to ride a motorbike or a scooter?
Thanks,
Jess

i have no license, tax, plates etc, just dont stop for the police, always wear a helmet and have a set of mirrors on your bike, if you do get pulled over the fine is about 5000 riel or so
if you want a cambodian license you can take your license from your native country and go to lucky lucky bike shop (posted above) and they will make a license for you for about $30-ish. if you get one made get a copy or made of your new cambodian driving license because if you do hand it over to a policeman they might keep hold of it because they know it'll cost you another $30 to get a new one, so they'll put whatever price they want on it when you ask for it back.
best thing i found is to drive as fast as you can towards whatever policeman is trying to stop you, or just fake them, theyre so gullible.
another thing i do is have a spare motorbike key for such times as i have to stop for the police and they manage to get my keys out of my bike, i have the spare one to flee as soon as their back is turned.

Have you ever driven a motorcycle before? A scooter is obviously easier because no shifting is involved (though 99% of bikes here don't qualify to be a motorcycle in my home country, lol). A scooter also allows for way more manoeuvrability, especially in the city. If you plan on doing a lot of highway riding, then of course a motorcycle is a better option, otherwise a scooter is the only way to go. You don't need the extra 100cc in the city, not to mention lack of agility, higher maintenance and fuel costs a "big" bike will have.Jessb52 wrote:Hey,

I've driven without a license, but eventually got mine (then drove without one again when I lost my wallet). It's just not worth the hassle anymore. You could ride with no helmet or license, but starting around 2008-2009, they got pretty tight on the rules. If you get pulled over with no license they ask for way more money. In the end paying the 30$ dollars or so as Bonez says (I've forgotten the cost) is worth it just because of the extra $ they ask when being pulled over with no license. I speak fluent khmer and can talk myself out of a lot of stuff but when I didn't have a license, the cops had that extra bargaining chip and just wouldn't let go. I've ran from the cops quite a few times, but wouldn't recommend it because if they happen to catch you one day (I used to run from the same dude near Lucky on Sihanouk several days in a row till I changed my route as I'm sure he was probably fuming and plotting some kind of revenge) you'll be in deep poo.
So in a nutshell:
1-Get a scooter, older looking is better to avoid it being stolen. Get one with taxes paid and a license plate.
2-Get the license. It's worth it if you live in PP and it'll pay for itself.
3- Wear a helmet during the day until you know which areas of town or streets it's ok to wear no helmet. Actually, I should be telling you to wear it all the time because it's safer.
