English to khmer translation for tattoo
Hi guys,
I've been travelling the world for 3 months now and have been wanting to get a tattoo that reminds me of my favourite place Cambodia.
Me and my partner have been using the saying ' let's run away ' for our travel blog as these are the words which made us quit our jobs and travel for 8months.
The English language is boring so I need some help in translating to khmer but also
Knowing how it will look artistically in terms of khmer charachters.
I'm aware that there may not be a direct translation but anything close would be good.
Not a great source but google translate currently provides the following.
Let's run away = taoh chab rt chenhpi nih
Please let me know if it will be impossible to translate into khmer characters.
Thanks
Ashley

Just to add that I would like to also look into translating to Pali script if at all possible.
I'm looking to hide my message behind a language representing a country I love with good memories.
Thanks
Ashley

Hello everybody!
sorry to join the topic (hope Ashleydwarner don’t mind)- but I need the translation from English to Khmer as well.
so if where are some people who can help - it would be great.
I can tell my story to not be like just people around the word who want something like Angelina’s tattoo))
as for me - I really like Cambodia, interested in the culture and my dream is to visit the country.
I know about Khmer tattoo since 2008 and even if I couldn’t come and get the right Sak Yant, I found the guy who translated to Khmer for me the sentence I wanted. I had a bad problem that time and I believed so much in the magic power of ancient Khmer language – so I got my tattoo here in my country and the situation in my life changed very much!
So I still believe and once I’ll come to the temple and will get the real Sak Yant. But till when – I would like to have one phrase in Khmer to help me a little bit…

Actual Khmer speakers will do better than me, but:
តោះយើងទៅឆ្ងាយ - taoh yeung tauv chhngay / Let's go far (literal)

may be you can translate for me as well?

I think you need to think carefully about the meaning and what it means to you before translating. If you translate it literally it won't have the same meaning, in English "let's run away" doesn't literally mean run to another place, it means to escape, but not in the sense of a prisoner. It's about leaving a place of familiarity and going somewhere new, for adults the 'let's' also gives a sense of romance, we can guess that you're not running off with your drinking buddy or window cleaner.
That phrase is so loaded with subtle meaning, that it will never translate in so few words and retain that meaning.

good post mate, will give them something to think about, translating between foreign languages is difficult and when being made for a tattoo is something that requires a lot of thought, starkmonster wrote:I think you need to think carefully about the meaning and what it means to you before translating. on the other hand i guess, the only time it would be a problem is if they were to come to cambodia again, other than that, no one would be able to read it anyway and they could tell all their friends what ever they want it to say as noone would be the wiser,
ive got some Thai script going across the top of my hand, so had to make sure i deffo got it right, or that would be highly embarrassing lol also got some Khmer writing going round my wrist, i translated it into script and double checked it with about 10 of my local friends who confirmed it was what i wanted
the locals love to read them, but back home i just tell anyone who asks that it says "chicken fried rice"

yes you're right.... but. first - i know what it means for me and the second - i wrote the phrase which is very simple and if not look too deeply and seek for any other meanings - translation might be done not literally but like just "close to text"
once i wanted the name translated and the guy who did it for me asked if i need the translation like you said - what does that name mean or just the name. and i asked just a name. when i was i Thailand - one man read it just like a name))
and now I prefer the same – just translation of words.

you have nice sense of humor))
why i can't use "quote"...

A phonetic transcription of a name into a different language is kinda different. In that case, you're trying to maintain the phonemic pronunciation across different writing systems/scripts. The native speaker doesn't have to know the meaning when reading it, because there is no meaning in their language - it's just a name.
So it says something, but means nothing. Not sure I'd want a tattoo like that.
I think you have to make a few dozen posts before quite function is allowed on new accounts.
