Hello all! I'm currently studying Khmer in the US and plan to go to Cambodia for 3 weeks in February to do a language immersion. I wanted to find out whether people had any recommendations for the "best" language school in the country. I've read the forum and I know people have suggested finding a good tutor versus a particular school, but I'm interested in having a bit more or a structure at a school. I have seen a number of schools online (KLS, Making it Easy, KLC, Don Bosco, etc) but I haven't seen any real reviews of any apart form the schools' webpages. (Although I may have missed the review if they're online).
In any case, I'd be grateful for anyone's suggestions regarding either schools or tutors. I'm interested in improving my reading and speaking as well as getting a better understanding of Khmer culture.
Many thanks for any advice.
Dee

I honestly feel that some schools will have good and bad teachers.dee_gomez wrote:Hello all! Maybe not bad teachers, but perhaps not suited for you.
I tried 3 different schools before I settled on one, I found all the schools to have very different setups. But it took me a while to find a teacher who suited me.
I think it'll be trial and error to find the best solution for you.
I have had schools recommended to me, but when I went I was really disappointed.

DON'T listen to the Hamster.
IFL always has great teachers, usually at 10+ years experience.
The Institute of Foreign Languages, part of the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), is one of the oldest and best.
Recently, filled with missionaries and doctors. My best classmate was a Catholic nun, who always gave me the answers whenever I came late. Nice people.
It's a legitimate course, but requires some study. The daily courses are the quickest.
My last course had a team of doctors before their foray in "bush medicine" where they would treat people directly in the province. Nice ...

He had a good experience at IFL therefore he thinks everyone else will too.
I have 3 friends who also studied there, 1 loved it, another was content and another hated it. None of them ended up speaking Khmer at the same level as me, although we studied for similar lengths of time (there were other factors there too, not just the school).
He fails to mention that class sizes are such that you can hide, get behind and end up wasting time.
Other places offer 1 on 1 classes for a similar price to IFL. 1 on 1 is more intense but (for me anyway) much more beneficial. With 1 on 1 you can control pace and content - you can't do that in a class.
I'd rather copy the teachers pronunciation rather than being corrupted by hearing my classmate who is butchering the language as much as me.
Have a think about how you best learn, if it is in classroom environment then give IFL a go for a term. Otherwise be prepared to try a few schools until you find a place (& a teacher) that works well for you.

Hamster is correct. Group classes are a huge waste of time. I took Spanish for 6 years in a group setting in HS and college and all I know is to say no me gusta and donde esta el lapiz. Nobody and I mean nobody learns language that way. Not even the 6 year old goes to a school 3 hours a week to waste time
Khmer is so cheap for 1 on 1. My first teacher asked for $10 an hour and second only $8. Get those teachers and you can't hide. Every second is on you and you will definitely learn
