My spelling is terrible but I always thought it was be the same as the end of happy រីករាយ but I just plugged that into the dictionary and got no hits.
But as the poster above says in this context means loose change.

Ot mien loi tik-tik usually works for me, no idea if it's the right way to say, but it appears to be understood and comprehended by the beggars
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
'Luy tik tik' is the opposite of 'lut ch'ran', so if you say 'Ot mean luy tik tik' you kind of tell them you have loads.PSD_Kiwi wrote:Ot mien loi tik-tik usually works for me, no idea if it's the right way to say, but it appears to be understood and comprehended by the beggars
It's clearer to use the word 'Ot mean luy re-ay', which refers to smaller bank notes. You can also use the word 'luy re-ay' whenever you buy something cheap in a store and when you check your wallet you can only find a large banknote there. If you hand it over while saying 'Ot mean luy re-ay' they will understand you're not just there the exchange it for small cash and accept it.

But as the poster above says in this context means loose change.
រាយ
to scatter, disseminate, spread (out); to divide up, distribute; to change (currency).
while the meaning might have a similar meaning in the west to not having "loose change"
i think the more direct translation would be not having money to give out/share,
which on the surface has the same meaning,
but the translation is slightly different if you was to use the word in a different context,
so wouldnt say Reay translates to loose, as there are already many words that exist for the word loose in khmer
but it gives of a similar meaning as we would use the phrase in the west

I think the most correct form is to say "ort mien loy chaï" when wanting to discard a beggar politely.

Either give some money, or just don't even make eye contact. There's nothing beggars hate more than excuses.

According to the Mrs at this end the closestYaTingPom wrote:I know "Ot Mien Loy" is Not have money but apparently you can't say "Ot mien touch loy", or variations of it, for Not have small money?
It'll come in handy for the few times I don't have small riel money as if you say " Ot mien loy" to a begger they look at you like "yeah, whatever".
My wife said there isn't a way to say it but I think she's talking tripe. I mean, she married me for fecks sake!
(I must just say I rarely give money to beggers, especially kids, but my wife makes me if it's an old decrepit wrinkley old prune type. Khmer not barang.)
'ot mien loi tam klun'
Basically meaning you have money but forgot to bring it with you.
I tend to sleep in the nude. Which isn't a bad thing except for maybe on those long flights.
Could I say that without making eye contact with the savages?
pew, pew, pew, pew!
