Khmer teacher for $5 an hour?
I am back in Phnom Penh after being away for 6 years, and I would like to find a Khmer teacher that could teach me for an hour most days of the week. Everything here seems a lot more expensive and I hate to be cheap, but I was hoping to pay $5 an hour. I don't mind if the teacher doesn't have any experience as long as they can speak some English. I could speak Khmer at a conversational level before, but I have forgotten forgotten a fair bit after not speaking it for so long. I can still muddle my way through a conversation but it is a lot of effort. If you know of a teacher, please let me know. Thanks so much.

For one to one tutoring it would be more like $10 up. I'm not sure it's a good idea to get someone who has no experience.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Go to a local high school and ask the school director if you can speak to a (or a few) English teachers. During the day, their schedule isn't full. If they've got a free hour, and you're able to show up during that hour, the teacher will be more than willing to teach you for the mentioned 5 USD.

A few years ago I was studying at a language school one2one for $5 an hour - can't imagine it has doubled in price inside a couple of years.Lucky Lucan wrote:For one to one tutoring it would be more like $10 up. I'm not sure it's a good idea to get someone who has no experience.
I know the teachers in this school only received about $3 of this per hour so I wouldn't have thought it would be too hard to find a teacher to do a homer for $5 an hour.

I agree; I should pay for transportation costs or I could meet the teacher somewhere as well. So $5 plus transportation costs. I will try asking at some schools. Maybe to make things simple I could just have a teacher help me get through Modern Spoken Cambodian by Huffman. With real intensive effort how long about would that take? Again, I hate to be cheap but if I meet a teacher every day and pay $10 then that is $300 a month, and for me that's not a trivial amount. The cost of living in Phnom Penh has gone up so much since I was last here. Before I stayed here on a budget of $1200 a month. These days I think that would be a challenge.

Huffman's book is kind of weak in my opinion. You would be better off going through Colloquial Cambodian and Cambodian for Beginners
If Phnom Penh is so expensive, why not try to live in Kampot or Battambang?

I know someone who's a pretty good teacher, but she'll cost you more than $5/hour. Khmers pay her more than that for private tutoring.. Yes, inflation here is high.
Also, I don't see why you'd want to have a teacher come over everyday. IMO it's way more constructive to study 3-4 times per week for $8 than 5 time/week for $5. Get a good teacher, pay a bit extra, and then take some down time to actually study what you've been taught at home alone.

Funny you should suggest moving to a smaller city in Cambodia to save costs because I have been seriously considering doing just that. I have 2 concerns though. First, can I get good western food in either Battambang or Kampot? And secondly how about dating? I am single and I don't think dating in Phnom Penh is easy, but it is a bigger city so maybe there is a better chance of meeting someone here. The first time I came to Cambodia I met this great girl, and we were together for a year and a half. We broke up though because she and her family wanted the two of us to move to America, and I wanted to stay in Phnom Penh.
I'd really like to quickly get back to the Khmer speaking level I was at before, so that's why I would like to study everyday. It is really frustrating to have so many Khmer words on the tip of my tongue, and if I hear them just one time I remember. Thanks so much for the advice.

Out of curiosity, did you break up with her over this, or did she break up with you? Did she eventually move to America with another guy? Most Cambodian women I've met really aren't that keen on leaving Cambodia. I've heard of some Cambodian women expressing a desire to move abroad, but I've never heard of one breaking up with a guy over this.riverside130 wrote: The first time I came to Cambodia I met this great girl, and we were together for a year and a half. Primarily it was over moving to America. I adored her, and I didn't want to break up. After we broke up, she met another foreigner from Europe. I was told that they actually broke up because she wanted to move to Europe with him, and like me he wanted to stay in Cambodia too. I think her family and her thought she would have a better life abroad, and I don't fault them for that. I haven't spoken to her in many many years. I really hope she is doing well and found the life she wanted.

I'm surprised you've never met one Gav. I've met plenty of girls who wanted nothing more than to leave Cambodia. Usually it's because they're wearing rose tinted glasses and think everything abroad will be amazing and easy. They always get a bit of a shock when they get here though. One really hot girl I knew told me she didn't really love the guy who finally got her the visa, but he was the k KY one willing to go ahead with it.

Is dating in Cambodia easy or hard? Gavinmac gave me the impression that women will be falling for me from the minute I leave the airport, but other posters make it sound like dating in the infamously horrible Washington D.C. metro area.riverside130 wrote:Funny you should suggest moving to a smaller city in Cambodia to save costs because I have been seriously considering doing just that.
