How come "Jackie Chan" who is completely illiterate in Khmer suddenly thinks he can criticize other's use of it? Lame as ever.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

This whole argument is why I strive to only learn contextually past a certain point. It's too easy to grab the dictionary but that robs you of the opportunity to memorize a word through its use.
For instance, I learned pday pdas when Somphoa says it in relation to Sros suggesting that a mismatched couple (that ends up breaking up) get married together:
(1:15)
She says like: កុំនិយាយ (Pday pdas) ចឹង
Sros apologetically says something like: ជ្រុលមាត់. Maybe can be translated as diarrhea of the mouth or "I've said too much."
There are other good examples of pday pdas, usually involving people making stupid suggestions or remarks.
This not only helps you retain the vocabulary, but gives you a bulletproof context in which you are sure it is right. So you can't really totally misuse it. This is how people naturally learn languages, and it is best to start that natural acquisition as soon as you can with Khmer.

Found a good use of gaic this morning in the paper:
ក្រុមគ្រូពេទ្យស្រងាកចិត្ត!! ស្ត្រីមា្នក់សម្រេចចិត្តយក ទឹកដោះរបស់ខ្លួន ឲ្យឪពុកពិសារក្រោយពេលគាត់កើតជម្ងឺដ៏កាចសារហាវ មានជីវិតរស់មិនបានយូរ តែលទ្ធផលដែលទទួលបាន ពេទ្យស្ទើរតែមិនជឿ!!!
The article is totally ridiculous and basically Cambodian clickbait, so I won't post it here (apparently some lady gave her dad who had cancer breastmilk and he suddenly arose from the dead). But it shows how gaic and the (I think) equally common sa haav are used to describe the illness.

លោកអើយ - Louk Ouy - is used in similar context as "oh my god"
a good example is in the famous song by Khemerak Sereymon - 5000 Dollar
at 4m40s
the songs about him meeting some girl and wants to marry her,
but when they ask the bride price her parents want $5000 to which his family cant afford as they are just a poor farming family
and at 4:40 he sings លោកអើយប្រាំពាន់ដុល្លារ - oh my god, five thousand dollars!

Gairt: someone that is mean, bitchy, strict -- Don't recognize this as you Romanized it.

But ច is a J/Ch sound, and at the end of words its a K sound, for example in the word អាច - AakJoon wrote:The T sound comes from ច at the end but it doesn't actually end on the sound t.Jamie_Lambo wrote:is it actually pronounced Gairt? because i read កាច as Gaach (Gark)? does it actually have the T sound on the end?Joon wrote:I think he meant chnah:ឆ្នាស and Gairt: កាចmerchantsmutual wrote:This is an easy one. Much of the romanisation of Khmer script makes little sense to me.
Therefore I never use it.

OMG I know right? It makes no sense. Even a simple example like "nov naa" -- "nov" like rhymes with cove? Shouldn't it be "nAU"?ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:I agree with you Jamie.Jamie_Lambo wrote:But ច is a J/Ch sound, and at the end of words its a K sound, for example in the word អាច - AakJoon wrote:The T sound comes from ច at the end but it doesn't actually end on the sound t.Jamie_Lambo wrote:is it actually pronounced Gairt? because i read កាច as Gaach (Gark)? does it actually have the T sound on the end?Joon wrote:I think he meant chnah:ឆ្នាស and Gairt: កាចmerchantsmutual wrote:This is an easy one. The weird thing is that some Khmer seem so sure they are right about they romanize it, but I think it's an elaborate game of telephone that started when the first SMS appeared in Cambodia and didn't have Khmer font. (By the way, what is up with some Khmer STILL not having Khmer in their phone? Come on, man.)
