you just never know with these people
A barang can own an apartment in a stand alone apartment building but not a flat in buildings like those in daun penh.
My little gold digger borrows my moto to go to work some nights,I indulge her because I like her company.
She is still looking for mr right.
Heard a story today about a guy who came here briefly and now wants to take his GF to his country.
She is allegedly a cashier at a well known bar but now wont answer her phone, which one I dont know.
I checked with a girl who works at the same bar and she has never heard of this girl.I can only assume that she freelances at the bar.
She cant speak english and he cant speak khmer so it looks like the same old story.
Crikey andy,we want those gold digger stories!

Are you sure? The way I understood it was that those flats could be purchased by foreigners provided they weren't on the ground floor.ken svay wrote:A barang can own an apartment in a stand alone apartment building but not a flat in buildings like those in daun penh.
My thoughts exactly there are another hundred on the next corner waiting for these mugs....hanky wrote:What the fuck is wrong with these guys? Correction: said apartment is apparently worth $75,000, not the $175,000 I misheard.
Not saying any more for just now.

Twitter: Not my circus, not my monkeys - I sold #K440
I had a look at those bali apartments about a year ago out near the international school.
I think it was 45k for a studio and 75k for two bedrooms.
Big tower block with a pool, gym, gardens etc.
Dont think they sold many, now they are advertised to let.
Probably not bad value compared to the west but poor location.
they are building so many condos in BKK1,why dont they build them and sell them to barangs instead of renting them?

I'd guess that most Barangs who live in Cambodia don't have money to buy condos. They can't really get mortgages to buy them, and if they are teaching English or even working for an NGO, it's hard to save up enough money to buy a nice condo outright.ken svay wrote: they are building so many condos in BKK1,why dont they build them and sell them to barangs instead of renting them?
Also, a lot of barangs living in Phnom Penh aren't planning to stay for the long run. I think it's a small market, unless you include the potentially unlimited number of Koreans and Chinese dudes with free cash lying around.

Hopefully we'll get more golddigger stories from AIA is the future. First-hand accounts are always entertaining.

Well, I'll just tell you about one of my wife's dearest friends whom she's known since teenage years. This girl was a top model. She is a stunna, with an engaging personality to boot.
When I met my wife, this girl had been in a relationship for a few years with a very prominent okhnea. You would recognise his business franchises in PP. He bought her a plush apartment and showered her with gold and goodies. Of course he had a wife who, after some time, got wind that he had a mistress. There was serious risk of an acid attack. Given the value that she placed on her face (she regularly flies to Singers for facial plastic surgery to maintain her youthful looks), she decided to get out. The okhnea is still pursuing her to this day, but she's free of him.
This left her with plenty of dosh but lonely. She eventually fell for a charming businessman who is based on/just off the Riverside; he's East Asian. They had a marriage ceremony in PP late last year and she was very happy. He had to leave the country on frequent occasions, on business, and he was very particular that she never checked his phone or email. Cambodian women tend to be either ridiculously suspicious and pry and follow you everywhere, or ridiculously naive - she was the latter. Last month it came as a complete shock to her (though not to me) that he has a wife in his home country with whom he is clearly maintaining a relationship, despite what he tells our lass. She's desperately depressed about this, and repeatedly tells my wife how envious she is at her happy marriage as they cruise around in the new car she bought last week.
What does one make of this? Do we pity her? She's not a manipulative gold digger type, she just loves the benefits that money brings and uses her beauty to acquire them. The men have duped her and used their money to exert power. But then like the Dutch guy, does one slam her for stupidity or wilful ignorance? If she's envious of my wife's marriage why not go for a decent good-hearted poor bugger like me - there would be many willing takers.
I quoted this poem in another thread recently - it's pertinent here. I'd say she's stuck on chapter 2:
Nb. Don't ask me about the gorgeous girl who facebooks my missus every day who married an American last year. He took her on honeymoon to ..... Pattaya. On the first night - their wedding night, he left her alone in the hotel room for a couple of hours. The marriage was over before the honeymoon. She's still looking for love in PP.

Chapter 1)
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost… I am hopeless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.
Chapter 2)
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I’m in the same place.
But it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.
Chapter 3)
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in…it’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.
Chapter 4)
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.
Chapter 5)
I walk down another street.

Why would a gorgeous girl marry a whoremongering old fart who would take her to Pattaya on honeymoon? She must be an ex-hostess who met the guy in a hostess bar.
You know what I'm thinking? Due to the cultural differences, the language barriers, etc. the local girls are as clueless about the backgrounds and suitability of the Western men they marry as the Western men are about the local girls.

Exactly. Because she's a gold digger?
It takes two to play this game.
As Hanky said above somewhere, what's good about these girls?
A normal Cambodian girl won't even entertain the idea of becoming the girlfriend of a married man. Unless she's very materialistically inclined indeed.

She was never a hostess - she's one of that ilk who don't deign to work in any capacity. They hang out at posher bars like Touk and dance at Riverstar. Most Cambodians of both genders who aren't sluts or have Western boyfriends have never heard of Pattaya - they assume it's just a nice beach resort.
The thing about whoremongering old farts is that if they have a modicum of charm, the more naive hostess or other girl looking for a good man don't see what we all see. I learned this when my missus did her stint managing DV8. In her cluelessness she honestly thought creeps like Phuket were decent sincere well-intentioned chaps. One had just about persuaded her to relocate to his home - in Pattaya. Hence this statement is absolutely on the button:
Note also that most of these girls really are exceptionally gorgeous and very sweet - in other words, just the sort of girl you'd convince yourself is a great catch and "different".

That's basically what I'm trying to illustrate in these tales, and why I say my sympathies for the supposed 'victims' of both ethnicities and genders is somewhat limited.gavinmac wrote: You know what I'm thinking? I don't know, Andy. I don't think they're as innocent as you think.
