The Khmer 440 "Best of" list
Let's start a Best of... list. Where are the best places to buy things, do things, day trip getaways, best happy hour, best hostess bar, best place meet people, buy chicken, buy fruits, etc...
Best place for a run at sundown: Olympic Stadium. There will be hundreds of people there, aerobics, people-watching, and loud music. That should help motivate you to get a good workout.

ive tried asking about doing something like this before, best hospitals, doctors, electronic stores, teaching info, guesthouses, good eats etc, id be happy to help with it in someway, there needs to be a new forum with stickied threads on each area needed, then people can add to it and you wont get the same question over and over again
"hi im 26 and want to know if i can survive on X amount of dollars and how soon will it before i can get a job on my TEFL degree and will my school give me a guesthouse to stay in blah blah...."
"hi im 26 and want to know if i can survive on X amount of dollars and how soon will it before i can get a job on my TEFL degree and will my school give me a guesthouse to stay in blah blah...."
yeh for sure, stickied threds for commonly asked questions is way overdue.
Great concept - but fucking hard to manage.
Those in country have a lot of knowledge that is useful when shared, but once you start a topic like this all the "Blow In's" just spam it and then complain about moderators deleting their posts. It then goes "Off Topic" bitching about "Free Speech etc" and becomes just another thread and no one wins.
If the k440 posters keep it subject specific and don't allow it to go off topic it might work.
You could end up with 3 or 4 stickies that hold a wealth of information.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

just keep it like Playboys thread, keep the bare facts in there and delete the shit, just make a new forum with a "new to cambo" section which has visa info, list of schools, reliable healthcare/pharmacies, guesthouses, it wouldnt be too hard to manage, the old skoolers could contribute the facts straight away helping considerably yadda yadda yadda, 2pm time for a smoke....scoffer wrote:Great concept - but fucking hard to manage.
I very much support Bonez's idea and I'd be happy to contribute. I know something like this would have been very useful when I arrived.

It probably was there with the search function. I don't agree with making things so easy for new-arrivals, when I got here first I had four pages in a travel guide about Cambodia, most about Siem Reap with one page about Phnom penh, otherwise it said don't go anywhere else, it's too dangerous. We should have something like that.Hemingway wrote:I very much support Bonez's idea and I'd be happy to contribute. I know something like this would have been very useful when I arrived.
Who Gives a Fuck?
Its true that I was able to get most of the information I needed using the search function, but it would have been quicker and more convenient with a sticky... But then, I do also like the idea of having a sticky that simply says 'just go back to fucking Pattaya'...

Love it... LOLCaptain Bonez wrote:could have a backpacker section as well that when you click on it a window opens up saying "fuck off you greasy cunt"

Duh, isn't that the point of advertising?
Why advertise a bar / school / clinic/ bus company if the owners will post it for free?

Because some companies will never advertise on K440 (or anywhere) but it doesn't mean they are not worth using. Do the bus companies advertise anywhere in English? What schools will advertise on a board with this demographic? Also if you're a potential advertiser and you see that you already have a customer base from a websites users why wouldn't you want to take advantage and grow that base by putting in a banner? You're targeting your advertisng spend. Sorryvladimir wrote:Duh, isn't that the point of advertising?

Thanks for the tips, everyone - and please keep them coming. KiR and I have been talking about the best approach to almost exactly this situation - useful local information which is likely to change regularly - where to find things, where to get medical attention, etc.
For the short-term, we can set up a few sticky topics. However, this setup is not ideal. As scoffer said, it can become messy quite quickly. I think that the ultimate setup would be for us to have a wiki-style environment where users can edit these documents themselves, so we don't end up with a thread that might go way off topic. (And if someone decides to deface things, it is easy enough to roll back.)
I'll look into setting something like this up. To get the ball rolling, what stickies do you think we should create? And what other suggestions do you have?
