Is live music killing Sharkies?
So it seems that when there is live music the bar is busy, what about the other 25 days of the month?

By western I meant Mexican, which I guess isn't "proper" western. Everytime I go there it's because I'm craving Mexican or something. I've actually never had any of their burgers or Khmer food. The fish tacos are great, so are the burritos. The portions are generous too. I find it's the closest to the real thing in a nice setting. I haven't tried the Mexican place son riverside though as I avoid restaurants there. Alley Cat is alright but I've never been overly impressed by it. Sharkys has the benefit of feeling like I'm in a real bar. I go mostly when I either get food cravings or homesick for a "nice" bar.angsta wrote:Good western food? It does look like a bar though.Bitteeinbit wrote: but it's still one of the only places in town that actually looks like a bar and has good western food.

back in early 2010 it was a live music place with some free lance hookers about the place..... remarkably like now. If you're looking for the days when Sharky's was considered "risque" you need to reach somewhat further back into the decade, my friend.Khmeria wrote:I think you're right dv8.

Previously it was a pickup joint filled with broads.
Now it's a live music bar that's empty except for a couple older dudes who play guitar and about 6 bargirls who haven't yet realized that everyone else left.
Thus, I miss the old days.

Yeah, the fish tacos were pretty good, but whatever batter they use for frying things (like their fish and chips and the jalapeno poppers) is bland and tasteless, kinda ruins the fried food.Bitteeinbit wrote:Everytime I go there it's because I'm craving Mexican or something. I was told there would be cake.

I find that true regarding the onion rings. I get cravings for onion rings about twice per year and they are alright but way too much batter, so it sits really heavy in the gut afterwards.

The steak is OK. The steak salad is bad because they drown everything in mustard sauce. Who puts mustard on a salad?

I wasn't ever that keen on the fish tacos even though they came highly recommended I was never overly impressed. The attempt at Thai food is ok. I prefer the riverisde mexican place when its open, it can have strange/inconsistent opening hours. Is the Mexican place in SR still open. I think it was run by some guy from San Diego?Bitteeinbit wrote:By western I meant Mexican, which I guess isn't "proper" western. Everytime I go there it's because I'm craving Mexican or something. The days of walking into Sharkeys and having 25 girls with one eye on the entrance are long gone. One of the last times I was in there I was eating at the bar and I felt someone tap on my shoulder, I thought here we go. It turned out to be 2 young Austrian girls who were backpacking though Asia and had read about the bar in one of the pocket guides. They were expecting a music bar. This was maybe 18 months ago so it still had a number of bar girls. They were pretty shocked by clientel I think.
Is the aircon still half arsed in there? I remember NB commenting that it was pretty shitty on occasion, I have to agree.

I know people who swear by that place on the riverfront, but I've been there twice with others and everyone thought the food was lousy, in spite of which it always seems to be busy. Give me Alley Cat any day.angsta wrote:

In SR, you mean Viva? Still there, they've been knocking down the walls of adjacent shophouses to enlarge it and it's expanded to quite an empire. I always thought the owner was a returnee, but I guess you're taking about this guy

yes the emphasis is on 'live music' on a weekend (friday/saturday) at Sharkys, hence last weekends 'Halloween Party Weekend' and this coming weekend we have a two day Oktoberfest Weekend featuring The Phnom Penh Hippie Ochestra !!
however we do have a very busy Ladies Night (every Thursday Night) and a regular Pool Competition (every Wednesday Night) for the first sixteen that show up (prize money $25)
Major events planned for December include Sharkys 19th Anniversary Party featuring The Curtis King Band (from Vietnam) and Wildlife Alliance Party Weekend (in aid of Phnom Tameo Rescue Centre); as well of course as our New Year Celebrationary Party !!!
Yes plenty of live music, theme nights, and events at Sharky Bar & Restuarant !!!
All welcome !!!
See you sometime !!!

You don't have to make money to be in business, take Skype as an example - 660 million customers but running at a loss since it's inception, you just need someone with deep pockets to keep the engine running until someone buys it.Captain Bonez wrote:theyre still in business, arent they?dv8inpp wrote:what about the other 25 days of the month?
The point of my initial post is, has the transition from one business model (being one of the better known pickup joints) to a almost opposite business model (live music venue with much fewer working girls) with a resultant change in customer base been a positive move?
If Cavern was a successful live music venue I wouldn't introduce hookers to try to make it busier.

Maybe they've gone overboard on it, but vinaigrette often has mustard in it.gavinmac wrote:The steak is OK. The steak salad is bad because they drown everything in mustard sauce. Who puts mustard on a salad?

Aircon?!?!?!?! Haha, there was never any aircon, was there? Well, they had one or two of those free-standing units which cooled off 2 meters in front so a bunch of people would just stand there... It usually had a few fans going though. Man I haven't been there is about a year, are there really no girls left, or have the numbers just dwindled?angsta wrote:Is the aircon still half arsed in there?
