New Beer in town
I had a bottle in Siem Reap.
2.50USD. That was the first surprise. The second one was that it tasted of nothing in particular.

Nothing designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator, nationalistic brain turds, ever fails. No matter where they're from people just love to wave flags for some reason...barforsalecambodia wrote:tried Cambodia beer last night when I was a bit more sober, but was still pleasantly surprised. It tastes similar to but better than Kingdom. it has a subtle sweetness to it which makes it different, in my opinion. i was kind of hoping the beer would fail because of its crude appeal to hyper-nationalism, but it may not.

I've tried it several times now, and I like it as well. (Much better than Angkor and Zorok IMO.) I bought a case at one of the drink shops at Kandal market (for $10.50 I think it was) and am pleased to report that, like anchor, NO hangover the next morning. No headache.. nothing. Very easy to drink, but with just a little more taste than anchor. A little hoppier perhaps. I'm considering switching from Anchor Beer to Cambodia beer.jm wrote:I finally had a can last night. Not so bad. Definitely better than Angkor and Zorok to my taste.
At Kien Svay a couple of weeks back, I saw more Cambodians drink Cambodia beer than Angkor or Anchor. Seems their "national pride" approach is working. Good for them. I wish them luck.barforsalecambodia wrote:i was kind of hoping the beer would fail because of its crude appeal to hyper-nationalism, but it may not.
Alcohol is necessary so that a man can have a good opinion of himself, undisturbed by the facts

i was watching the brewery go up as it is near my place. good looking facility... very Modern. think they missed a golden opportunity not calling it Khmer Beer but whatever. i have been drinking it in the bottle and the can. $10.50 a case for the cans and $16 for the bottles.
have not seen the dop thom yet. i like it. has a nice lager taste.

Why, oh why, didn't I take the Blue pill?
They tried to call it that but had some obstacles so went with Cambodia instead.
So far it seems very much an attempt to create a mix between Angkor and Anchor and to copy their success.
I guess it is a typical Asian business strategy to copy and paste what someone else is already doing and then to sell it at a lower price which ends up cutting into everybody's margins.
However they aren't that cheap but I believe they are giving a big cut to the shop owners to take the stuff first.
From there on in it will be up to the local market to either support or ignore them. None of my 5 local shops have it yet so still waiting to actually taste the bloody stuff.

Glad you like it guys. The brewery is indeed world-class, german technology and whatnot.
I agree the nationalistic appeal isn't very appealing to us barangs, but we're not the target demographic!
It's getting more widely available, which is a good thing. Rob, I even found a Cambodia Beer carton in Chi Phat (quite the remote hole), so where the hell are you living?

2.50USD a bottle at Sports Bar in Siem Reap. The added value comes later. You buy 3 and then get one free
I live in central Phnom Penh on quite a busy road just off a main boulevard and the 5 shops that I normally buy beer from don't stock it. These shops range from small Khmer drinkshops to international style minimarts. I have seen some cases of it around town but just not at any of my local shops and I an not going to walk around looking for it (I am keeping my eyes out for it, just ain't going out of my way)
I did ask one shop owner for Cambodia Beer and she offered an Angkor which technically is a Cambodian beer but I refused and asked for a better beer instead so she gave me Anchor.

I have et to see a mini mart sell them which I find strange. For some reason I would have thought the chains would have it first like back in the west.rob77 wrote:These shops range from small Khmer drinkshops to international style minimarts.
Same thing happens when I ask for it at a bar. With all the advertising I would think more locals would know about itrob77 wrote:I did ask one shop owner for Cambodia Beer and she offered an Angkor which technically is a Cambodian beer but I refused and asked for a better beer instead so she gave me Anchor

I'm kind of amazed at shops/ restaurants/bars which stock Angkor but not Anchor/ well-known new beers. Do they get paid NOT to cater to a wider spectrum of customers, because you could make money on betting that someone IS going to ask for it, right?rob77 wrote:I did ask one shop owner for Cambodia Beer and she offered an Angkor which technically is a Cambodian beer but I refused and asked for a better beer instead so she gave me Anchor.

bfsc, I was talking more about the cans and bottles, why would someone not stock bottles/cans of Anchor? Is it only expats that drink it?

I found Cambodia Beer at Ponleu minimart on 172. They charged me a freakin dollar a tin! Only bought 2, which for me was 2 too many. In a word, "boring" as in some Mexican light lagers, e.g., Corona.

I found the stuff at last at a nearby semi-regular minimart I go to. They had bottles for 90 cents and cans for 60 cents.
So it seems more expensive than Angkor and almost the same price as Anchor, for cans at least.
The taste was better than a lot of cheaper imported beers that always have a nasty after taste of chemicals. It also had a cleaner taste than Angkor but as others have mentioned it is a bit thin.
I managed 2 cans but then went back to Anchor which is smoother and easier to drink. Cambodia is too watery for my tastes.
