Fishing Gear
Re: Fishing Gear
In snooky samudera has a limited selection, much better at the double fronted shop about 20 metres towards the beach from the fishermans den on eckareach.
In phnom penh there are several options, the department store at the soraya, there is a good fishing shop down sihanouk on the right as you go towards monireth, near that bend where you can turn left to olympic market.
Another one on st,oh I forget, near mao tse tung.
the shop is directly opposite the east west school-google it.
As for fishing off the beach-no forget it.
You can cast off the wharf at victory beach in the evening or at night and maybe catch a ray or a baby shark.
Brian at the fishermans den runs trips three times a week, one catches lots of small reef fish off koh rong with occasional cobia and maybe a spanish mackeral or barrcuda trolling going in or out.
Plastic bags are the usual catch on the big lure.
There is a website with a chap who fishes off the beach in a small boat and he catches a few small fish.
I believe the best fishing would be in the tidal creeks and estuaries on the way to snooky, near snooky or around kampot.
There must be barramundi and mangrove jack just like australia.
The khmers net the creeks but those species are probably in the mangroves most of the year and survive.
I remember going to the fishing shop on sihanouk and asking about lures for the creeks.Oh no said the shop keeper,we never use lures-well there you go you clown, you dont know.
Brian at the fishermans den has a tinny and outboard on the way from australia or NZ-this is the way to fish I think.
But generally the fishing is crap unlike australia and NZ.

I don't think 'catch and release' has caught on here.

I can just imagine the conversation when trying to explain the reasons behind 'catch and release' to a Cambodian fisherman....talk about blank looks all round.SunSan wrote:I don't think 'catch and release' has caught on here.

Sohi i caught this fish in said river on a lure. The builders laughed when they observed a plastic fish as bait. Stupid barang. Then five casts later he head builder got his tea. Saw a huge fish come up one day. Also catch what looks like a cross between a piranha and an angel fish. BTW im a neighbor from up stream . seen you at suvvets shop a couple of times.
lets see if it works

I tried lure fishing in the river but the fucking thing kept getting stuck! maybe i'll try again, i got five brand new lures so i might as well. The fish definitely are in the river but not in big numbers (lots of babys), but maybe I've just been unlucky!

There is a ban on catching the Mekong giant catfish. Initially, the WWF was paying market price to local fisherman for any catfish caught in Cambodia. From there, the fish would be rehabilitated, tagged and then released. However, MAFF (the government fisheries department) said that by offering money for these fish, the fishermen would continue targeting them - and that it had to be an outright ban.
I'm not sure how effective the ban has been. Anyone on here ever caught one?
