I did have that feeling just a little while ago when I casually mentioned to some people how I was surprised and happy that my aforementioned doctor's visit (Bokor Clinic) was only $20 and they responded that it should have been around $8. The consultation fee alone on my receipt was $10... I guess behind every smile and compliment can lurk that very attitude. :sigh:Playboy wrote:Fuck them. Stupid idiot lazy Khmer Rice Wogs. cambodia has a strong personality, but still not enough to be worthy of a special treatment by us.
i understand the many of you talking here about learning the culture for instance, but having traveled in most of asia i can say
it's not a unique and incredible culture but in many ways simply a subset of the general asian culture and lifestyle you can see
anywhere else, and this looks to be true especially here in phnom penh in my humble opinion.
once you live in china, SE asia, etc you will hardly be surprised by what the average guy in phnom penh says about a specific topic,
what they eat, how they dress, how they drive, and much more ... and if that matters Phnom Penh itself is more and more a cross between Saigon and Bangkok.
there's little culture shock switching from thailand to phnompenh, try from Bangkok to Rangoon instead !
as for khmer art and culture, i would like to see the locals making some effort about understanding what it really is, why should i learn khmer when the average khmer can barely read or write and can't even spot cambodia on a map ?
i see too many barangs overinvesting in time and energy devoted to khmers and cambodia, and unless they plan to settle down here forever or for many years i think it's potentially a waste of time, just deal with the khmers the way they deserve and be happy with that, we're just guests here and in most of the case they tolerate us but deep in the heart they don't have many friendly feelings toward us, same as in thailand, vietnam, laos, and much more.
this is a sad fact but we must accept it, i know the odd NGO guy will now jump on his seat and scream i'm an idiot etc etc but i talk by direct experience.

I'm not an odd NGO guy, but you're a fool who thinks he knows everything and you can shut the door on your way out.

28 years in S E Asia and 40 years traveling and i have learned a few things
1, You will never be accepted as a local ( no matter you have a local wife an kids and speak fluently)
2. You will never understand the Asian mind
3. Every country and its people are unique
1, You will never be accepted as a local ( no matter you have a local wife an kids and speak fluently)

"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer." HST
When i first moved here i was determined to learn khmer: fast. Went through all the stages: khmer teacher - nobody understood a word i said in the market etc. etc. etc...
then i gave up, well kinda. I already speak four or five languages - without too much of an accent and fluently, soo why why not khmer??: first: i learned those languages as a kid. second: i learned them , well kind of.. well they just happened...
soo when after quite a few years i moved to a place where nobody spoke anything but khmer.. it still took me - forever- and then some. but: my khmer being far from deep philosophically workable, i all of a sudden find myself speaking quite well- without thinking that i do...When i do though: i loose it all. strange...
.(.and than there is that thing: ducking words that we can not pronounce right anyways, and paraphrasing around them...).

I do dearly hope you are a troll as if you are indeed reflecting your thoughts then you are one narcissistic messed up bunny who probably should be on the first plane out of here. Hence, for the sake of anyone who has to be in the presence of your company, please be a troll.PhotoKhmer wrote:cambodia has a strong personality, but still not enough to be worthy of a special treatment by us.

to each his own .. it's not my fault if most of the asian cultures are a subset of China.
having lived in china i can't be too much impressed by the so called "khmer culture" which in big part is also a subset of the hindu culture, symbology, etc.
i'm not criticizing cambodia, i love cambodia !
all i'm doing is having a personal opinion, can't see why some people here jump to conclusions and go hellbent against whoever dare to say something on the khmers.

2. You will never understand the Asian mind[/quote]
you can not understand it 100%, but in my opinion you can reach 30-40% with some effort.

If an African man married a neighbor of yours (a Western gal), and this man spoke broken English, would you be accept this African man and his ways?
If said African man studied and worked 15 years in your country, got a doctorate, and spoke with barely an accent, would he ever be "one of the boys"?
Some (not all) of you newbies need to apply the Golden Rule. We are all human here.
Some parts of Western culture are unacceptable in Asian culture, or perhaps Asians don't do so well in that situation. So they prefer not to learn the language.
I DID think we were the more enlightened educated types though, from the "greater civilization" and were a bit smarter, but as we can see, obviously not. Richer, yes. Stronger, ok. Smarter, no.
The Asian mind and Western mind are often at odds, but they are not mutually exclusive, just a difference in degree and often obscured by fear and emotion.
For example: face. Face is often not as understood by some Westerners. It's almost as common in our culture. "Oh, we can't be seen [ bla bla bla ]." and "I wouldn't let him get the satisfaction by [ bla bla bla ]."
I think the only thing it takes to understand another culture and language is EFFORT. It is like a pile of small stones. It's not so diffiult to move them, but they are not moving by themselves. One has to reach out and move them, again and again, and you get stronger each time you do it. And some people can't be bothered to move those pile of stones. Ah well...
