Tribute to a bar that died too young :'(
It's with a heavy heart that I heard The Drunken Sponge on st.51 will be closing its doors this weekend. Not sure if many of the 440 crowd ever made it in there but it was a great hang place.

Yeah, I used to like the drunken sponge, was a nice place to sit at the bar and chill out? Does anybody know why it closed down?
Oh no! My fellow Yorkshire man! Good nights in there with him standing at the bar shouting at all the fellow 'god's own county' folk 'Yorkshire in the fucking house. Yorkshire in the fucking house. MY FUCKING HOUSE!'
I think I can tell that by the amount of posts you've just made in the past hour. Under new messages, you're pretty much the last poster on everyone.SunSan wrote:No worries. There'll be something simikar when you're back.

Was the Drunken Sponge ever viable or busy in that location? It's always gutting when an expat bar with decent music goes down, but I thought the Sponge's glory days were down by the lakeside.

On the weekends it was always busy, on weeknights,er, not so much. I feel that they opened a little too late during the week about 9ish. Seeing that the clientele were working people that's a tad bit late. It may have been the rent that did it in as I couldn't imagine it being cheap along that strip. Oh well, the place is going to become a girl bar. I hear Phnom Penh needs a few more of themkeeping_it_riel wrote:Was the Drunken Sponge ever viable or busy in that location? Is the owner the same guy who made posts about his own death, pretending to be his own brother?

I only went there once and me and a friend were the only customers in maybe 2 hours. They had done quite a nice job on the decor/bathrooms etc, but as said it was probably n the wrong location.

Because all they offered was $1 beers!!
Busy sellin' $1 beers?? No wonder it's finished.cambod wrote:Popped my head last week, and that was the only time. Looked pretty busy..
Another casualty, another bunch wondering why a place is done because all it offered was cheap drinks to
people who were never around to support it properly. Shameful. But hardly a major surprise here.
