Yeah, I wouldn't put too much stock in blaming the management.
Knowing Khmers, I dont think he had any evil intentions. At the worst, I think he is guilty of recalcitrance. I think its very easy to let in some people and think to yourself, "Oh, they will be alright". I could kmagine doing the same myself.
Im sure the management and guards felt bad when they realised that the actionds resulted in someones death... and the resultant loss of money for many people.
What happens at other places? I know I sometimes get patted down at some places. Has anyon ever seen a Khmer patted down outside somewhere like Martinis?

I seriously doubt that he thought this. There were several previous incidents of gunplay at the Heart, much of it coming from the same type of customer, including one incident in which a tourist was shot in the leg the previous year. This was just the first time somebody actually died as a result of the gunplay and violence at the Heart. The dangers of the Heart was common knowledge amongst many expats. I can believe that everybody knew except the owner and management of the Heart. They knew exactly the risk they were creating when they let these people in unchallanged.

The bars without guns are simply bars that don't appeal to gun owners. I can see you've never tried stopping them beforefopro wrote:BubbleT
This is not necessarily true. There are bars in town with proper security that have managed to keep the guns out of their bars. There were guns in the Heart because the management was not willing to do what was necessary to keep them out.If they want to bring a gun, they will, and if you try to stop them, you get fucked (and not in a good way).

Bars like the Heart appeal to the gun owners because they let gun owners in without a hassle. There are other bars in town where the security is good and the gun owners have both received major hassles at the door and/or are disallowed entry. It's a big problem one time and then they never come back. Bar that don't allow gun owners inside don't appeal to gun owners.
Bars that knowingly let them in are either lazy, greedy or just like the too cool feeling of having gun-toting thugs hanging around. The Heart was all three and more. They were also deceptive, deliberately leading the tourists to believe that they were safe when they weren't.
I wouldn't take a job I knew couldn't do, especially a security job. That would be unfair to my employer and dangerous to the people I was supposed to be protecting. It would be unethical at best to be part of such a sham. The bars without guns are simply bars that don't appeal to gun owners. I can see you've never tried stopping them before.

About 1 year ago, my best friend watched the Heart being shown on a primetime tourist television programme in the UK. No guns (or hookers) were mentioned!
Love it or hate it, the place was an institution in PP. Can only hope that they have since bought a new CD as i was getting bored with the one they have played every night for 3 years running. My watch even started setting itself...

so, did it open already? I passed the spot today and it still looked like there was heavy work in progress (at least at the 2nd floor: no windows etc.) however, a small 'tagaboung' was already placed behind the door and incense sticks fired --- just curious. Whatever they make of the new place, if there would be a wish list, I'd hope that they would provide 'real' security checks (as in Martini's: also for Khmer's, especially the ones arriving in 4WD's) and better air condition.

Anyone know what happened on the street near Heart at about 2am last night?
I decided drop in to the Heart to check it out a little after 2am last night. As I was driving north up St 51 (I think) I passed a crowd gathered round on the road outside a place a few doors south of the heart (didn't catch what it was). There were a few police in reflective vests in the crowd, but nothing seemed to be happening. As I pulled up in front of the Heart and was sitting on my bike checking out the parking situation there was a loud report from amongst the crowd further down the road, and then another one. Definitely sounded like shots from a handgun. I didn't stick around. Anyone heard anything?

It was kindof funny - after posting my question above, I said to myself 'why not just passing by and checking it out by myself?' yesterday.
Indeed - the HEART is OPEN.
And they seem to have security guards which at least seem to check the barangs. Possibly even Khmers, too?
A friend suggested to park next to the LOTS of motorbikes (around 70) in front of the place, but I felt a bit of a inner 'resistance' to do it right now ... and then it happened: SCREEEEEECH! A big 4WD car and a normal car "touched" each other (the smaller one going against the one-way), wow, it sounded "expensive" when they scratched each other heavily while moving back and forth numerous times. Suddenly, the 4WD driver seemed to turn completely crazy, took some startup to frontally hit the other car, then pushing it for about 100m down the street, in shocking speed. On the way, he was hitting down a girl which was left injured and strongly bleeding in her face and left arm (we asked her if she wants a lift to the hospital, but she declined) as well as at least 4 motorbikes of which 3 were heavily damaged.
The small car escaped, almost hitting down another people moving around in front of the Heart disco, the 4WD drive suddenly stopped, the driver who turned out as a barang was immediately pulled out of the car, knocked down and hit with feet (the usual procedure) by a couple of Khmers .. due to some wonder, a few other Khmers were crying something like "stop, stop" until they stopped.
The scene looked extremely chaotic, broken parts of motorbikes, blood, the 4WD car on the street and the usual crowd trying to see what happened. I and a friend had been extremely lucky - had the 4WD pushed the car right instead of left of the street, we'd be amongst the victims now. I guess the barang man, propably some embassy or NGO staff, will not have been let go before he ensured paying at least a few thousands of USD for the damage... we left when the situation calmed down and looked safe enough to pass by, but if you heard a shot, this propably happened after we left, I didn't hear one.

They always did that. That's why the place was always full of guns.
Yup, the Heart is back....Suddenly, the 4WD driver seemed to turn completely crazy, took some startup to frontally hit the other car, then pushing it for about 100m down the street, in shocking speed. On the way, he was hitting down a girl...

Well at least someone managed to say something nice about the fucking death trap. I have consulted my Feng Shui expert, who suggested the name being changed to Heart of Goodwill, and also suggested moving the whole bar 15 feet to the left, to avoid the bad spirits.J. wrote:Come on fellas. What about the name ?
Hey?At least I think it has a good name for a venue.
