I usually try to avoid posting but, Mormon, please just address cambod's observation.
Do you realize that you can have as many portions of meat as you want? It's an all-you-can-eat buffet, I think. You just ask for more.... And more. Did you know that?

Can you explain why Mormons always ride around with the seat at it's lowest position so their knees are going up and down like crazy? Do they understand how inefficient this method of cycling is?Mormon wrote:Even Mormon's need to take a break! Oh boy, do I live dangerously? Have you tried riding around Phnom Penh on a bicycle selling religion?
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I'll be thinking about this next time I see one.Lucky Lucan wrote:

Hey Mormon (if you really are one) - I'm interested in your answer to this question:
Why do Mormons emphasize part of the Word of Wisdom but ignore the part forbidding the eating of meat except in winter, cold or famine?
Doctine and Covenants 89:12,13

Doctine and Covenants 89:12,13
12 Yea, flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly; 13 And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.
Because they are exactly the same as every religion based on any old book, and they just pick and choose the parts that please them. They are also the same in that they have excuses for why ignore these points.chubacca wrote:Hey Mormon (if you really are one) - I'm interested in your answer to this question:

I have no objection to answering questions on behalf of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - day Saints. But before I do, can anyone recommend a restaurant serving a good Sunday Roast!
Magnets.
It began from a South Park episode, and some have attributed it to an Insane Clown Posse song...but the reason is that Magnetism, along with many other scientific laws is not explained by religion. Most Mormons would reply that there is magnetism because "God" had made it so, not the scientific answer - either a moving electric field or spin of quantum particles. This latter process causes materials to become inherantly magnetic (like a bar magnet) when a large majority of particles (particularly electrons) have the same spin, which results in a north-south pole configuration. That is my honest answer.

The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. You're right many do ignore it. But actually the original 1835 edition of the Book of Commandments (Precursor to "Doctrine and Covenants"), leaves out a very important comma in verse 13, causing it to read:
"And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine."
With the comma gone after the word "used" it now reads that eating of meats should not be restricted to times of winter or famine. No one knows who put the comma in there for subsequent editions, only that it was inserted by an editor who was preparing the text for a new printing. Researchers are unaware of any direction from Church authorities to make the change. Regardless of this, the previous verse does say we should eat meat "sparingly".
One reason for the lack of emphasis on abstaining from meats now may be due to the fact that at the time this revelation was given the preservation of meats, especially during the warmer seasons, was not as effective as it is now. People at that time were therefore subject to more foodborne diseases from poorly preserved meats than we are today.
One must also consider other Mormon scriptures to place the subject of meat eating in proper perspective. The Word of Wisdom does not advocate total vegetarianism, as evidenced in the following scriptures, also found in the Doctrine and Covenants:
"And whoso forbiddeth to abstain from meats, that man should not eat the same, is not ordained of God;
For, behold, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and that which cometh of the earth, is ordained for the use of man for food and for raiment, and that he might have in abundance."
We ephasize the part about abstaining from coffee, tea, alcohol, and tobacco because that is how our latter-day prophets have interpreted those scriptures for us in this day. They have also refered to the Word of Wisdom as they counsel us against the use of illegal drugs; something that was not a problem in 1835 and therefore not mentioned in the scripture.
Thank you for your interest.

Yeh, breaking news - that was only last August. That was nice of God to change his mind, just like when he softened up and told your man Kimball that black saints should have some rights despite Brigham Young declaring they couldn't get into heaven. Maybe if you really really importune God, next he'll go easy on your hair shirt and chastity undercrackers.
But I don't recall God going back on that directive chubacca flagged up. How can you justify eating meat gratuitously and frivolously when your book condemns it? Why not go the whole hog and drink wine with your steak?
EDIT: beat me to it; nice one. Must have been slipping in the rogue comma. You lot have your very own Satanic Verses!
I came, I argued, I'm out
