I'm interested in how much it would cost me, yearly let's say, to live a very simple life in Cambodia. I'd live in a smaller city, cook for myself at all times, and I'd be happy in a one or two room place. No drinking or prostitutes.
What would be the cost of renting a small place with electricity/internet vs. without?
How does the cost of some common foods compare to the rest of the world? I'm thinking rice, local vegetables, chicken, etc.
I'm quite good at living minimally. For instance I manage to live on about 700$ a month in the US, which includes 300$ rent and another 100$ for gas and car insurance. If I lived in Cambodia, I'd just ride a bike.
Also, how much does water cost and how likely is it that I could drink/cook with the tap water in a smaller city?
Cost of living minimally?

In Phnom Penh the water is ok for washing/cooking/brushing your teeth but I wouldn't drink it unless it had been filtered/boiled. Water outside of the capital can vary from relatively normal-looking to muddy-brown stuff from bore-holes. I wouldn't think about drinking it.slakke wrote: Also, how much does water cost and how likely is it that I could drink/cook with the tap water in a smaller city?
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

The water in Phnom Penh is safe to drink, you do not need to filter or boil. People are used to buy drinking water because its very cheap.
You can survive here with less than 10$ a day, and just wait to die from a heart attack before you reach 54. Dorms can be found at 3$/day, street food in markets are 1$-2$ a meal, rooms starts at 65$/month and many small apartments available for less than 200$/month.
You will not need to cook. Just enjoy your 24h a day nothing to do life style.

i never had one in thailand, its in the 250 to 300 baht range... (8 dollar)
here its 3 dollar or so... and it looks as if a pizza is served, finally...
with the water... i still have to find where you can buy 5 liter canisters- not in the supermarkets?
