Lack of bars in Russian Market area
Ironic, I suppose, that I am posting this after I put the bottle down. I have lived right next to the russian market for the past 6 months. There are of course many restaurants you can order a beer/wine/spirits at. However, I have only noticed that there is one "pub" and it is expensive and all Khmer. The name, Apsros Pub, is busy every night until late, which I find odd, considering the Russian Market neighborhood is a ghost town after 9 PM. Why has someone not opened a expat-friendly pub in the Russian Market area? Is it rent prices? Lack of available rental locations?
I know that Orange Dragon or perhaps, as my memory fails me, another 440 member bounced around this idea a few months back. In business school ( i know) it was business 101 class that drilled the fact that you always try to first find what a target location needs. I don't drink anymore so this is not a plea for me, but it seems like someone would open a western style pub in Russian Market. Think about it. There is not 1 "go to" after work style drinking bar in the area. Just Ichiban and a Orchidee and a few other restaurants that serve alcohol. Large YEAR ROUND expat community. Tourists half the year ( although I think you might have to orient your bar toward expats or tourists, not both) Then again, I don't know shit about running a business.
What does everyone think? Does the Russian Market area need a nice little pub for a few after work beers. No bullshit, no gimmicks. ( this whole time I am thinking about the Garage) While I don't think anyone can even attempt to copy what JM has, it is what comes to mind when I think of a nice , afterwork watering hole.
I know my rambling here is not the most coherent, but you get my point.
I really am looking forward to your responses.
Oh, and no, I am not using K440 as a focus group for a potential business idea. I am just taking the time to type this because I am truly curious.

I should hope not. If you quit boozing, then open a bar, one would assume you hold a subconscious desire to get back on the turps, and, thus, that Cambodia has you now.DetroitMuscle wrote:

There used to be The Local but yeah, a bar would be a welcome addition. The rooftop bar at the Frangipani Hotel is nice though.

I heard their happy hour is pretty nice for location. But I mean... that still doesn't fit MY idea of the "afterwork" watering hole.. Its a sky bar 30 stories up...BURLESQUE@SDHHOTEL wrote:There used to be The Local but yeah, a bar would be a welcome addition. The rooftop bar at the Frangipani Hotel is nice though.
I guess that while their are no bars, there are also no loud as KTVs, although the music from the Frangipani Sky Bar can get a bit loud at night... but I live a block away and 3 stories up... so it hits my windows pretty direct.

The Board Game Cafe has just opened just south of TTP. Not a bar, but I'm sure you'll all agree it sounds fucking awesome.

Some areas should just be preserved for the purpose of recreational or scenic activities. There are no public parks in this city. I can't stand all these chains and franchises. I wandered around GSM yesterday for the first time in what must have been 8 months, and the whole area has metamorphosed. Not for the better I hasten to add. I happened to pass by st. 104 and found myself sharing the same breathing space as a bottom-feeder...Before I didn't quite get what everyone meant, but now I do. The differently styled sleeveless vest, with an inch of sleeve to cover the shoulder caps. The swagger that carries these individuals from pillar to post. The underwear they sport as normal casual wear. Where the hell did Phnom Penh go?DetroitMuscle wrote:hehe, you are right, perhaps we need another coffee shop.0zirC wrote:You wouldn't want every area of the city to be congested with bars would you?
Back to reality...it would be an abomination, it would absolutely be a bad idea to open up more bars that would entice such atrocities to infest this country.

i've been, their food is tasty. thing that sucks, you have to pay $3/hr/person to play the games... even if you are ordering food. not a good way to fill a cafe...DetroitMuscle wrote:There has been one a few blocks from the market. Those who begin coercive elimination of dissent soon find themselves exterminating dissenters. Compulsory unification of opinion achieves only the unanimity of the graveyard.

The Local changed name to the Madhouse then closed; they've been digging up the road outside it for months doing flood-prevention work so it's inaccessible. The Aussie proprietor is still in PP.
