Pedro on Phnom Penh's Best Value Sunday Roast
Pedro returns to the #K440 front page with an essay on the ideal expat Sunday in the tropics and where to source its core component - the best value roast dinner in town:

Has anybody ever managed a large Cavern Breakfast followed by the large Cavern Sunday Lunch?

You should get your picture on the wall for such a feat.

The gravy-boat & sauce dishes take up too much space on the plate for my liking.

Great piece.
I'm looking forward to the next totally independent article on Phnon Penh's best bar (Garage), best evening out (The Flicks Movie House), best cider (Brunty's) and best Service apartment offering (Murray's Place).

Yikes! It would be an interesting wall for sure.

KiR - A quick note on the thread title. I am not an English teacher but I still know that "Best" is the comparative of the adjective good. I was expecting to see a review of all the Sunday Roasts in Phnom Penh comparing them to one another for value.
For anyone who would like to make the comparison Buffalo Sister is serving our 1st Sunday of the Month roast dinner this Sunday. Dine-in or delivery Roast Lamb with Mint Sauce or Australian Roast Beef with Yorkshire Pudding, both with all the trimmings @ $8.50. All Roasts are 24 hour slow cooked and served with our signature three meat gravy.

sister, the comparative of good is better, just saying. Now about your roast, is it a pre-ordered affair at a certain time or turn up when hank marvin kinda thing?

Yeah, seriously. The Cavern is my go-to spot for roasts, but at least give it a title along the lines of "Pedro Reviews The Cavern" or something like that. Pretty blatant plug-in for an advertiser. An overall review of several roasts (it's been done in the past, and we're due for an update) would have been more appropriate. I tried Paddy Rice's roast last week. Although I despise the place (location/customers... Ok, maybe just "dislike". I try to avoid it as much as possible), the roast wasn't entirely bad. The roast was inferior in terms of value (though the chicken was good) compared to Cavern, but those little stuffing/falafel balls were really good. Rising Sun isn't bad though I haven't been in a while. Can't say I'm a huge fan of the Cavern breakfast though. Simply too greasy/oily for my taste. Then again, maybe I should stop taking big portions of everything...

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
jmho... in a country where you have to cook beef for 24 hours to make it edible, i will stick to chicken...

There aren't enough places selling a decent roast every Sunday to justify a full article. When the Vespa was open there were two and now there is one, which is the Cavern.LexusSchmexus wrote:scobienz wrote:Great piece.

The Rising Sun do a decent roast chicken but their roast is horribly let down by those soggy things they serve up as 'roast potatoes' which are truly dire.
As for Paddy Rice? Why send business to an overpriced, poor value tourist trap? Added to which, we have a limited budget for food reviews so why waste cash buying food for review purposes from a venue known for its slapdash,half-assed, phoney Western cooking?
Yup, we gave the Cavern's weekend roast an excellent review, but the review would have read word for word exactly the same even if they didn't advertise, because I honestly think they do the best value Sunday roast in town.
