Eggs Benedict at Metro
Eggs Benedict at Metro
After 5 years in Cambodia I finally got around to sampling one of my favorite dishes. Having traveled half-way 'round the world to plant my stake in Cambodia, I tend to eat Khmer dishes more often than not. I've had 30 plus years of western fare going down the gullet, so no need to pursue that with gusto while residing in foreign country. At least that's my thinking.
But the beauty that is eggs Benedict has been an itch that needs scratching. Twice I attempted to try it at the Cavern, once on a Saturday mid morning and recently on a Sunday mid morning. Both times, right after reading a post on 440 that explicitly stated that they would be on offer over the weekend and what the hours of operation would be. Alas both time I was rebuffed, and they weren't available. Fair enough, however they have now lost my future custom.
I've read posts on here recommending Metro's eggs Benedict so I thought I'd give it a go. Now Metro, from the outside, seemed to be more of a pretentious and stuffy locale than I'd normally be inclined to visit. But as they say don't judge a book by its cover. And I am happy that I didn't.
For me, Metro has the perfect mix of class and conviviality. I sat inside, nice comfortable and well arranged seating. The staff, professional with well spoken English and the much appreciated and ubiquitous above-the-knee skirts.
The meal was fantastic. I ordered the standard with ham. They also offer it with spinach or salmon. The eggs cooked to perfection, hollandaise top notch, 2 sprigs of asparagus, a grilled tomato, and a clutch of roasted potatoes made nice accompaniments and I was tucking in no more than 10 minutes after ordering.
Damage - eggs Benedict with ham - $8.20
- Twinings English Breakfast Tea with biscuit - $2.50 iirc. It was a pot that filled three cups full.
- 10% service charge
A delightful brunch which I would recommend and I will be back.

Thanks for the review, eggs beni' is my favourite breakfast meal and when I can be bothered to make hollandaise sauce at home I make my own.
Do Metro make their own hollandaise do you know? More often than not when ordering eggs benedict at restaurants, I find they use a pre-made hollandaise from a jar which is never as good as the fresh home made sauce.

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
@PSD
Good question, and for those with discriminating tastes, it can make or break this particular dish. Regretfully I am not much of a connoisseur and I could not tell by taste. Though during my next foray I will make a point of asking the staff or chef directly.

I'll have to try it myself also once I'm back in PP

Metro's might be twice the price, but you get twice the meal. The Brown's EB doesn't quell a hungry stomach; it's more of a snack.jm wrote:Haven't had a bad one....certainly recommended.starkmonster wrote:It's is usually good, but I've been there a few times and it was shit, way too much vinegar. So pretty sure it's not from a jar.
If you're on a budget, order two eggs Benedict from Brown's. Half the price, but still good.
And the SpinachEB at Metro is wonderful.
I came, I argued, I'm out

The rest sounded good, but Twinings tea FFS?- Twinings English Breakfast Tea with biscuit - $2.50 iirc. It was a pot that filled three cups full.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

There was a travel magazine on flights between Singapore and PP between 2007 and (at least) 2009, which had a Phnom Penh city profile that consisted of two "must-try" dishes for visitors to Cambodia: the eggs benedict at Metro and the croque-monsieur from La Croisette. Those fabulous recommendations were later replaced with an interview of a long-term expat who recommended Martini's as a good place for a quiet drink.

Come to think of it, Martini's was the name of the charming little bar in It's a Wonderful Life where George went to drown his sorrows. I could imagine a nice elderly American couple showing up to expect a similar scene before they are greeted at the door by 'the head' and a gaggle of pros.shizzle wrote:Those fabulous recommendations were later replaced with an interview of a long-term expat who recommended Martini's as a good place for a quiet drink.

It should be lemon juice NOT vinegar!!!!!!
Note to self: Must be nice to morons.
A good overview of the best Eggs Benedict dishes in town here.
What happened to the Cavern's version? Do they still do it? I never got a chance to try it.

After Robbie left I pulled it off the menu until the staff learn how to make it. They've had one go at it and it was OK but I prefer they did it a few more times for me before I let them do it for customers.
