I think the issue is she's known him for months; drinks and meals have been bought, I assume.billythekid wrote:To call you "oncle" is tradional and respectful, if any Lady thinks you are older.
My experience of the last 20 years in Cambodia: After you pay the 3rd drink, they will call you "bong" of course.
When a young Cambodian woman calls you "bpoo" . . .

Yeh but if by now you've neither bedded her nor popped the question she probably misjudges your motives, unc.

Also you run the risk of being thought of as the gay friend "Katoey" if you don't speed up and be a bit more direct....

She dropped the P-word bomb already, Gavinmac told her to call him Bong and she reluctantly agreed to.

I actually meant it as "creepy uncle..." but I'll just shut up and hope Gav is not too attentive.andyinasia wrote:Joon wrote:She dropped the P-word bomb already, Gavinmac told her to call him Bong and she reluctantly agreed to.

LOL. I don't mind it when a girl calls me bongprohs, except when I was looking for more. It happens very rarely because usually my intentions with girls I like are quite clear as I have a very flirty personality. I have a small handful of female friends who I've known for several years whom I call sister and they call me brother. But I reserve the term for long-term, strictly platonic friendships. Essentially, girls I was never sexually attracted to.
I can't remember if I've ever bedded a woman who called me "bong prohs". Maybe I have, but even if you work your way out of that hole it's just too weird. If I just like the girl then it's fine, but if I was aiming for more, it does piss me off... "No! Don't call me bong prohs! I want to be INSIDE you, I don't want to be your fricking brother!". Seems she really doesn't see things the same way you do Gav... Better to move on. Think of it as the Khmer equivalent to being friendzoned (which I'm sure you're highly accustomed to ). Once you're in, there's no way out...

I don't know how things are in Phnom Penh, but elsewhere "Bpoo" is culturally the term used to reference strangers...like other posters said at least she didn't call you Oum. LoL. I remember my 18 yr old cousin, who was always referenced as Bpoo by this other young girl (sister-in-law's cousin) who was also 18. Even after knowing each other for 2 months or so, it was always still Bpoo.
Oddly enough she always called me Bong even though I was much older; likely has to do with me being semi-related to her family.
