Simply The Best (Value Hostess Bar?)
Simply The Best (Value Hostess Bar?)
On my way home yesterday at about 11.30 am I noticed a new bar on 130 street, next to the minimart shop on the corner with street 5. The door was slightly open so I thought I would take a peep inside. It was quite dark inside and I could just descern a solitary female figure at the far end of the bar. She looked at me and said "Hello Mèo đen, where your girlfriend?" Turned out to be Tshavey a girl I have known for about five years who previously worked at Nice Friends Bar and stayed on when it became Nice n Cozy Bar.
She told me this was her first venture on her own. She had opened about two weeks ago. Opening time is 12pm and drinks are buy 1, get one free until 8 pm. Anchor draft and cans are all $1.50, Stolli and G&T $3. About half a dozen or so very friendly hostesses are in attendance. Music is pretty good and your choice. As you might guess from the name of the bar Tshavey is a Tina Turner fan so that's what's background if there are no customers around. Also worth a mention the toilets are squeeky clean! I went back last night around ten to buy a few beers and give a bit of support. Had about four customers in during the time I was there. Got a couple of pics and said I would give her a bit of publicity to help "drum up" trade.

I thought this wasn't a pant-sniffers forum and there was a pretty strict no-whorebar chatter rule in place? Not that I care either way. It looks pretty depressing.

Jesus christ! its a hostess bar not a brothel! You go to have drinks in convivial company and be entertained by hostesses. Many girls do not go out with customers. Dont tar all hostesses with the same brush! and similarly don't assume all customers are "pant sniffers" Loco and Angry Birds have advertised here and quite a few posters frequent them and they are certainly not "pant sniffers" or whatever you like to derisively call them. Have you ever actually been to a hostess bar!BURLESQUE@SDHHOTEL wrote:I thought this wasn't a pant-sniffers forum and there was a pretty strict no-whorebar chatter rule in place? Not really my thing. Paying for young girls to pretend to like you is rather pathetic, when you think about it. But each to their own.Mèo Đen wrote:Jesus christ! its a hostess bar not a brothel! I think your (to me) strange perspective is because your view is probably more about how you imagine a bar to be rather than the reality. We are approaching the subject from different cultural base. For example I pay restaurateurs to provide me with a good culinery experience and hostessess for their attention, conversation, pouring drinks, massage and the like. Similarly going to the theatre I am paying for a performance. I pay a hostess for her performance, not to like me. In the same way people pay me to take an interest in their project. I give undivided attention, constructive criticism and advice. They pay me and we both go away (hopefully) happy. Like the hostess or the restaurateur I am happy if I get return patronage and relationships do develop over time. I have clients I like working with and Hostesses have favourite customers.BURLESQUE@SDHHOTEL wrote:Not really my thing. Doing business in Asia often necessitates regular visits to hostess bars (or horror) karaoke joints. Back in the ,90's the only way I would get frank discussion from my male staff is to go with them to a karaoke bar. In Japan a lot if not most busines is conducted in hostess type bars, and for small companies, entertainment can be 20%-30% of project costs. It is said that Japanese cannot be frank without liquor and as already mentioned that also applied to my staff. Far from being pathetic visiting hostess bars is just an everyday part of living and doing business in asia. We obviously inhabit different worlds.

Is there enough of a customer base to support these all these places. I know Locos and Angry Bird seem to do an ok trade, and Shanghai seems to have a good support base, but I don't understand how these identikit places stay in business with just 3-4 customers in them at any time.

I think many Khmer businesses, especially the small ones, are more to keep people busy than actually make a profit. Added into that mix is that many of them are rent-free, and it's no wonder that hundreds of businesses that would have closed shop years ago in the west are still open here. And Khmers are not great at admitting failure, either.scobienz wrote:Is there enough of a customer base to support these all these places.
