Street 51 bars for sale
I was riding down St. 51 this morning and saw signs at Pit Stop saying it is for sale. Then passing T Pub next door there was a sign there too saying it was for sale. There was also a sign up outside Lady Night bar that may have been a for sale sign, but it was in Khmer, so maybe not.
I wonder if these sales offers are related to the long rumored redevelopment of that side of Street 51.

St. 51 has lost its sparkle. It's going the way of Martini's (not that I was here in the prime days of Martinis and Walkabout, but i'm just going on what i've heard).gavinmac wrote:I was riding down St. 51 this morning and saw signs at Pit Stop saying it is for sale. Re: The redevelopment, the Van family own GSM land. If you already knew that, then hooray you.

Friends of mine who reside in the housing behind the shop/bar fronts have hinted that D-day for that side of the street is imminent. My old landlord was unable to guarantee an extension of lease as he had previously citing "because I don't know". Normally I'd suggest asking Howie, but seeing that he's also trying to sell may mean his response might be, err, bias?

No, they're related to a government guarantee that everything will be hunky-dory for 100 years.gavinmac wrote:I wonder if these sales offers are related to the long rumored redevelopment of that side of Street 51.

We actually broke the news of the imminent evictions of these Street 51 bars here on Khmer440 back in 2008:tuk-tukfish wrote:Friends of mine who reside in the housing behind the shop/bar fronts have hinted that D-day for that side of the street is imminent. what were they thinking ?
they overbuilt like crazy and now because of supply and demand things are getting back to normal, each week i see a shop closing down and a new one opening up, serves them right but 51 is here to stay .. walkabout, pontoon, HoD, Shanghai, they ain't moving or closing down anytime soon.

The land opposite GSM is owned by the RCAF and they'll do with it whatever they please.

Shanghai just fitted out two floors last year, one would think they must feel secure in their space to do that.
