You can spark up a smoke no problem, just ask for an ashtray and the staff doesn't fill it with water or tissue like other places! Ugh!, my pet peeve be it minor..
Not been there yet. On Riverside Someone passed me a flier with a free beer with dinner coupon -- so they are reaching out to folks on Riverside.scobienz wrote:Has anyone else tried this new place on 174 yet? I met PB for a few beers there last night, and have to say I was very very impressed. It's a small place but has been designed immaculately, and the owners have spared no expense in fitting it out - great bar area, fantastically comfortable seating, nice fixtures and fittings and even thoughtful little additions like power points on the customer side of the bar to charge your phones etc. They have a limited menu of western and Thai food.
It's a step up from the lower end places on Riverside, but with all the quality of a good hotel bar, without the prices. Draft beers are $1 all night.
Best of all is the staff. The owners are a Thai / Canadian couple, and very very welcoming.
Curious as to the food quality.
Also strange name (?)
Taxi, we'd rather walk. Huddle a doorway with the rain dogs The Rum pours strong and thin. Beat out the dustman with the Rain Dogs; Oh, how we danced and you Whispered to me ... You'll never be going back home

Went in for a looksie on Sunday night. Very nice inside but they do allow smoking. Proprietor Natalie was friendly. Will try the food next time. They are closed on Mondays.

I am going one night this week.scobienz wrote:I'll speak to the owner and ask her to put up a 'No TEFLers' sign in the window. That should fix it.
There will be grammar-Naziness on a scale hitherto unseen in any bar.
And no, I'm not anti-semantic, although I was accused of disliking Joons.

Time to spread the word to all the 20 something teachers I work with. They are always looking to save a buck or two! " DOLLA DOLLA BEER YO!!!"Playboy wrote:Damn it Scooby, now all the riff raff will know about this hidden gem !
I hear that even rebo went there last night, accompanied by the true reason we invite him anywhere.
If I see even one TEFL Jobber there in the coming weeks I am going to blame you !
Enjoy it while it lasts.

Maybe if all the teflers get together they can negotiate to have a lawyer/accountant-free bar?
They could call it No Sharkeys or something.

If all the Teflers got together and had their own bar, you wouldn't need to ban the lawyers and accountants.vladimir wrote:Maybe if all the teflers get together they can negotiate to have a lawyer/accountant-free bar?

After reading all the good reviews on here I decided to give the place a try for lunch.
I was very impressed with the place itself. It's big, very well-decorated and has a great TV area and a pool table at the back. Loos are spotless, too. I'm certainly going to come here for a few beers in the evenings. The staff is attentive and nice and the food didn't take long.
I had the banh mi lunch special, which is $5.50 and comes with a free tea, coffee or soft drink, so not too bad on the wallet. The food was nice enough and the accompanying salad was nice but the portion was very small. I could have eaten two and I'm not that big of an eater. The mug of coffee was big, but coffee is cheap.
Overall I'd agree that this place is definitely a welcome addition to the restaurant and bar scene in PP. I saw the bar menu and it has a good happy hour and drinks are reasonable at other times. Next time I'll try the Thai food. They had a beef salad which I'm hoping is Issaarn style.

Screw the smoking. Maybe they should start a trend, being a bar leaning towards trendiness, and ban smoking inside.walkjivefly wrote:Went in for a looksie on Sunday night. Interesting, I was back in Oz recently and the opposition parties want to introduce a bill to ban tobacco sales to anyone born post 2000. Obviously it wouldn't kick in till 2016 as the perps are effectively already banned until age 16.
