sihanoukville places to stay on holiday?
sihanoukville places to stay on holiday?
Hey guys, I and a mate will be heading down to sihanoukville on about 2 January. I live in Bangkok right in the middle of the city and traffic. We normally shoot to PP for visas and few weeks back came to sihanoukville for first time and was great to leave the busy Bangkok. So we are heading down on the 2nd next month for about 12 days.
I am after any recommended places to stay. We need two rooms and want aircon and at least double bed and wifi and mini fridge. Had a look online and found a few that looked ok for $20 but thought you guys might have some that were worth recommending. We only want pay about $20 a room each. We are not the kind that need a monster room and luxury its just got be safe and clean and those few things listed.
Another thing we were chasing is looking at hiring a scooter each for the whole time there. We have not looked into this yet but I recall seeing some signs about near some hotels last trip. Any recommendations on were to hire as well would be good. Also anyone know what they rent out for down there per day or week in $ ?
On a side note I am little worried but another very well Asian travelled mate was down PP about 6 months back and rented a scooter and parked it near a bar he went to drink at that night. He came out and it was stolen and the bike shop charged him $700. So could been stolen for real or maybe a scam who knows. Is that something that happens often or any things I need be extra careful with hiring a scooter there apart from giving the police $1 or 2 sometimes hahaha
thanks guys for any help or input you have

I like Aqua Resort at around 25.00-30.00 per night. The owner John can help you with a hassle free moto rental, and is a good source of info.
If you up your price range to 25.00-35.00 per night, it get you several nice offerings near the beach with a pool.
The Beach Club, Orchidee, and Reef Resort are all very fine and great value for money.

Second Orchidee. Pool bar is nice.
Walk down that road heading towards the circle and there are a few shops renting out bikes around $5/day. Wear a helmet.

You're planning on coming right in the peak month so people have been booking up the good places literally from 6 months ago. Prices are high although off the Xmas/New Year peak but the weather should be glorious.
Aqua resort is always reccommended as well as Beach Club Resort and Beach Road Hotel but they are all a little over your budget ($25+), at this time of year full of screaming kids in the pool and anyway I would expect them to be full. For $20 maybe look at staying in a place downtown or on Victory Hill where you get more bang for your buck especially if you're hiring motos. Staying around Serendipity you will be in a Khmer-owned and run guesthouse which is a hit and miss affair but in the middle of the action.
Always lock the moto and even if they supply a lock I recommend buying a seperate one as there are stories of renters stealing their own bikes from barang (although don't know if it is actually true). Locking your bikes to each also makes them harder to steal.

Oh yeah, bikes cost about $5 a day and you leave your passport with them as collateral. Everywhere rents them so have a look around and get good ones.

Small Hotel is also an excellent option right in your price range...........but it is downtown. If you rent your bike from your Guest House.........you can rest assured there will not be any scam. Wear a helmet, and be aware that police checkpoints on Ekreach are very common. If you see one......I would make a u turn and to the other way.

It's never bad to bring your own (quality) lock(s) wherever you go when planning to rent a bike...

This is about the only thing LoneStar and I agree on, so that says something. I have stayed at Aqua twice in the last few months and thoroughly enjoyed it. They now have a new website: [http://Aquafamilyresort.comLoneStar wrote:I like Aqua Resort at around 25.00-30.00 per night. I will be at acqua so probably good reason to avoid it! That's a joke, it's good. Lock the hire bike with a chain and good lock, the ones they supply are rubbish. Be extremely careful of crazy Khmers running lights etc, it's fucking dangerous.

It's a good cheap place to stay as well, if you don't need a pool. Beach Rd is pretty inexpensive and has a good pool. I don't know what they charge 'high season' but they're both $15 or so the rest of the year. I haven't heard about it much in SHV, but the steal back scam on rent-a-bikes happens all over SEA. They've got the keys and know where you're staying. It's usually best to rent from your guesthouse.savantas wrote:Zana house, they rent out motorbikes for 5-6 dollars, clean and quiet place. Not far from the Lions roundabout.

Last time I was at Orchidee around 15 Scandinavian babes booked in, some tour, and invaded the pool.
No need to go to the beach, LOL

I was just looking for hotels for some peeps I know from the States in 3 weeks and Aqua Resort (like others stated) is the way too go. $24/nite all in. They don't bump up the high season price. Zana house & Beach Rd get the Silver & Bronze if you can't get in.
thanks heaps for the info guys. I will follow up the suggestions when im back in bkk with good internet.
thanks again
thanks again
