I worked in Chau Doc some years ago but would come to PP once a month (not much happening in Chau Doc), I seem to remember a few wild evenings in there. Preferred this to HoD.

Will it be moving to a new location, or is it really closed forever?
I know I'm unloveable. You don't have to tell me. I don't have much in my life, but take it - it's yours.

OMG its true - Asia's most sleazy venue has finally closed. With that, the change in direction of Sharky Bar (out go the girls, in comes the loud - and mostly very bad - music. Mind you, at least the place still hasn't been cleaned in 25 years) and the demise of Cathouse, the old guard has well and truly been kicked in the bin (or, more literally, the balls). Those girlie bars are dumb ("Hi" says the uninvited girl who starts thumping you on the back thinking it's in some way relaxing, "I'm actually the cashier and only began work yesterday. Buy me a drink."), the backpacker/cheap beer bars boring as hell and the trendy bars are eh, trendy and full of 20 and 30 year old luuvies. It's tragic when one is unable to move with the times - Christ, I'm still listening to Glen Campbell (great guitarist, FYI).
Sometimes I miss the wild days and setting of Martini 1, the 2 was forgettable and the last reincarnation was ok but never quite the same. Especially since it had turned into a chinese/korean joint in the past few years.

It will go unnoticed as the sleazy expats (from the countless nights spent in the first Martini, I guess I must be one of them ) are either gone or settled.RBD wrote:OMG its true - Asia's most sleazy venue has finally closed. From what I see here or on the streets the new model of sleazy barangs is all about looking like a bum and train wrecking, no need of a Martini for that .
What's the rent on this place? A light dusting of antifungals and antibiotics and a good scrub and the property could be turned into something interesting for young go getter ngo type hipsters.. I feel a Bassac lane flavoured BKK2 renaissance coming on, with a heavy dose of ironic pseudo erotic artwork in homage of the site's former glory.

It was a good place back before it got filled with angry Koreans, the disco was loaded with some pretty good looking chicks, and the whole laid back spacious feel off the Riverside was kind of cool, you'd avoid the common tourist crowd, it was more for the folks who'd been around awhile to take their friends and visitors for something different. Hopefully someone will reopen if the landlord decides on lowering the rent again.

I was at the 10th anniversary party in December 2005, awesome night, fondly remembered, so it is only 20 years old.
Plus in about 2003 the place was trashed when they fired most of/all the staff and it had to be redecorated, therefore at worst it has not been cleaned for about 12 years.
Note to self: Must be nice to morons.

It wasn't that sleazy. Not this latest version anyway.
I knew a couple of NGO types - Husband and wife team - who used to go and like and sit in the courtyard and watch the nightly parade.
Plus for a couple of years it was okay for an ice cold can of beer lao and pizza.
Full of eastern asians though recently and really only worth a drop in for nostalgia sake.

As Jackal said the bar staff summed up the place for me. 4 of us came across from Thailand twice a year for a long time and the same bar staff and 2 in particular, she left a while back. I thought the pizzas were brilliant and I've never been on drugs. Best memory was the ride into town from the airport a long time ago and clocking a smile with a girl on a moped at each traffic stop. Standing at the bar of Martinis and who should Bestood next to me. I guess that's what attracted to me to Phnom Penh back then, it felt very small and personnel.

I went for the last night. Loads of barang, some Koreans etc. Hardly any girls. Got there around 9:30. I was just about to leave when a hot Vietnamese girl appeared from nowhere and hit on me like in the old days. Bit expensive but overall a good experience. Nice way to say goodbye I thought.
