Having had an annoying amount of time on aeroplanes and in airports recently, I picked up a couple of books to read during the process.
The Jackson book was a little disappointing, it plodded on and was rather pedestrian.
I have not started the Merriman book yet, will probably get around to it next week.

Titus Flavius Josephus: The Destruction of the Jews.
The account of a particularly brutal part of The Jewish War between Rome and Jerusalem in the first century, written by a Jewish warrior who fought for Jerusalem in the early stages of the war, but switched sides halfway through and eventually wrote his history while enjoying the patronage of the emperor Vespasian.
I was led to it by the excellent Rome and Jerusalem by Martin Goodman, an account of relations between the two cities durign their respective glory years.

"The Mountain Is Young" ... Just finished, by Han Suyin...
"As all human beings are, so are we solitaries, Unni and I. And this we accept, though others repudiate the thought, for all humans are frightened of their own solitude. Yet only in solitude can man learn to know himself, learn to handle his own eternity of aloneness. And love from one being to another can only be that two solitudes come nearer recognize and protect and comfort each other." HSY

The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen
"Set as the flashback in a coerced confession of a political prisoner, the book tells the story of the South Vietnamese Government in 1975 and subsequent events in American exile in Los Angeles, through the eyes of a half-Vietnamese, half-French undercover communist agent.[7] The spy remains unnamed throughout the novel from the fall of Saigon, to refugee camps and relocation in Los Angeles, to his time as a film consultant in the Philippines, and finally to his return and subsequent imprisonment in Vietnam."
Only read the first hundred pages or so but I am enjoying it so far

I’m heavily into Roman history at the moment so I’ve been wading through various bios and histories from different periods of the emperor. Currently it’s Adrian Goldsworthy’s biography of Augustus. Before that was Livy’s The Hannibal Wars and Caesar’s account of his time in Gaul.

You should check out the work of Guglielmo Ferrero if you are interested in Roman history.
