Looks like Malis might be worth checking out.
Might take the wife up there. (When we get married!)
Edited to add their menu. (Don't open up in 3G, it's a PDF!)

Where exactly on Norodom is Malis ?
I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

I had a breakfast meeting there a few weeks ago and it was a shocker. I made the mistake of ordering the beef noodle soup and it was without doubt the worst I've ever had in PP. An absolute shocker with minimal amounts of beef and about 3 times over priced. The English breakfast my colleague had didn't look that good either.horace wrote:^ just south of independence monument.

That said, the croissants and pastries did look good though.
My posts are just jokes, maybe they're rude, offensive, and politically incorrect. They're not my opinion, viewpoint, idea, or judgement, but they're just fucking jokes so lighten up.
Did the cost make a difference to how it tasted?
I showed my oh the menu and she was saying "Hmm, nice squid" at the picture then went "$8!" "I can buy squid down the beach for $1. Why do you want to go there!" (It is nice squid too)
It's expensive but a special one off. Fine.

I have the feeling most would get ballistic when they see the prices, whereas it wouldn't matter or would be " justified" for barang food.

That's true. I just can't make myself pay $15 for a local dish when I can get it in a hawker centre for $3. However, I do find some expensive thai restaurants in Bangkok are good.logos wrote:I have the feeling most would get ballistic when they see the prices, whereas it wouldn't matter or would be " justified" for barang food.

I don't eat much of the beef Noodle soup but theirs I've had twice, and both times decent enough. Sure, not the best breakfast ever, but I'm paying for decent food, very tasty croissants (last time from Khmer and they come with any order), and the nice outdoor atmosphere early in the morning before it is hot out. I like to sit right next to the fish pond.Garry Crabtree wrote:I had a breakfast meeting there a few weeks ago and it was a shocker. Horace, I think the Khmer style beef soup is like $3 while the omelete is about $5.5. It's not American sized or a full English by any means, but I like it and don't find it overpriced.
Anyone who doesn't like Capitalism is a pathetic loser. God bless the USA and no place else.

Doesn't rock my boat . i was hoping for a khmer style buffet, never mind i'll stick with my favourites : Tinat 154 st for omelete or noodle soup, place opposite smile mart on 136 for su mi , Sovanna for beef stew and just about anywhere else for pork n rice, shame there's still a lack of choices for a full English.
Edit ,forgot the shop for Salmon and eggs and that fancy new French bakery on 240 across 51 for croissants and chocolate things.
Sod dinner for dates go straight to breakfast.

I just checked out Van's website. Impressive building but it just looks so poncy and...French!Clutchen Menuts wrote:Vans for classical, or Zino
I know it's Tripadvisor but it's only 86 (Malis and Topaz are first and second) and is behind just cafes and the more common stuff, that French people would not dream of dining in.
Topaz looks a lot less pretentious and it serves smaller stakes for the ladies.
Personally for a bit of a blowout it's a tossup between Malis and Topaz and all depends if you prefer French or Khmer. Should be easy to decide.

Went to Malis on our trip to PP and after the girlfriend got over her nerves (first time in a proper restaurant) we both enjoyed it.
My only gripe was one of the waitresses was too quick to take the plates away and especially awkward as my girlfriend usually hadn't finished. It kind of made her feel pressured into finishing.
The odd thing was the wattress would take the plate and put it on a trolley directly behind her and then another wattress would take it away, or nearer the kitchen no doubt. It was like a baton race with plates. Quite odd.
Oh and don't order the crab. Very messy and measly but tasty nonetheless.

Khmer habit - remove the plate as soon you lift the last mouthful, even if the other person at the table is still eating. Even more annoying - removing your beer/wine glass as soon as you drain it. That's a cardinal sin in the Anglo side of Europe and gets a slap in the face.YaTingPom wrote:

I still think Doors is best if you order wisely, but it might not be posh enough for that special occasion. Also it has easily the best live music selection in the city ATM with an eclectic variety of quality bands - the 2 gigs last month were excellent (a Frank Sinatra tribute evening and 'A Night in Tunisia' (i.e. Dizzy Gillespie etc). In general service is also very good - efficient but not over-bearing.
