how-to-avoid-getting-pickpocketed/
Fairly good info and most of us know this but.....
A couple centuries ago, pickpocketing was the scourge of cities around the world. From Dickens’ London to New York City’s famous Five Points, skilled thieves practiced their craft, filching the valuables of passersby without the victim noticing a thing. In fact, that’s how pockets in clothing got their start: Prior to the 17th century, men and women alike carried their valuables in purses outside the body; they then started tying pouches inside their clothes in an attempt to thwart would-be “cutpurses” and thieves. But pickpockets soon adapted and learned how to deftly extract the goods from trouser, waistcoat, and jacket pockets alike.

I once had a woman who was harrassing me on the riverside use a razor blade to slash my jeans pocket to lift $70 from my pocket. I felt the slight sting of the razor twice but thought it was my hernia playing up.
Watch out for superannuated hookers grabbing at your genitalia. With the other hand they'll lift your pocket. This happened to me in Saigon when rather pissed at 4am and walking along the street.
In both instances I was stunned and admiring of their skill.

I think RFID theft is more of a threat to people. A well placed harvester could make many thousands of dollars a day in Angkor Wat, as an example. Most victims not realising they been robbed until many thousands of miles away.
Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.

(Thai) Gathoeys are very good at quite a few things. A loooong time ago near Thermea at Sukhumvit one of them approached me, laid his hands around my waist: baby let's go room. I instantly knew what time it was, (around 4 AM),grabbed his claws, inspected them, empty natch. Looked around me & there on the pavement laid my cash.
I hadn't felt a thing, wearing tight jeans!
More importantly (to me, sorry for the derail): Where can i get a connect4 like today?
Advice greatly appreciated

Card skimming is infinitely more annoying. I was skimmed and had to lock my account and change every card that was ever connected to any account with that bank because, of course, the system is all integrated now. Even if a knob gets my wallet I can just cancel the cards with one call and swallow the loss of hard cash.EdinWigan wrote:I think RFID theft is more of a threat to people. I've only stayed in Jomtien and the katoeys will back off so long as you don't give them machismo and show a cursory knowledge of Thai.Phuket2006 wrote:word of advice in Pattaya at 2-5 am on walking street and the beach road

The gang of katoeys who've moved into SR are significantly worse and will not back off at all. They also all have moto drivers who will whisk them away after a robbery.
I agree with Ed here, i think in the future RFID thefts are gonna give them banks some major headaches, due to the vulnerability of the tech infrastructure, penisjokeforaname wrote:Card skimming is infinitely more annoying. whilst card skimming is only a problem for those who aren't aware that crime even exists.
A Skimmer needs two sets of info: the pin, diff ways to get that plus he needs to read out the magnet strip of your card in order to clone it. By now, have you ever wondered why most ATMs have some green beak around the slit where you enter your card?
A skimmer needs to superimpose (sic/sp?) a card reader. All you have to do is rattle that beak heavily, if it doesn't move an iota of a mm you're safe.

Contact less payment terminals are very portable now and can be just an attachment to a Smart Phone.
A contact distance of up to 5 cm is required
PIN not required for payment of up to £20 ($30) due to rise to £30 ($45) in September 2015 (UK cards)
http://www.theukcardsassociation.org.uk ... ctless.asp
We tested this, with every ones permission in my local pub on a Saturday night. We chose a choke point and set the reader and soon got triggers.
Now only £20 each but that is half a monthly wage for some people in Cambodia. (no disrespect to Cambodian people but many others, from overseas, live amongst them, some there just for criminal opportunities)
Press the accept on the reader and wait for the next. Nice earner and very little chance of getting caught.
Been to a temple of late or down the Riverside?
Protection is easy on this one:

Yeah, 'Wave n Go' machines are contact less technology and it is already happening.Starving Pelican wrote:Good point, EW. It's only a matter of time until thieves reappropriate the technology from those 'wave and go' machines.
There are all sorts of new 'Slight of Hand; scams starting with the portable machines. The kind that are brought to your table in restaurants, for you to enter your PIN.
