Wine and cheese nights
Are there any regular wine and cheese networking evenings in Phnom Penh these days. The Intercon one seems to have stopped and Khema's obviously ended when they moved out of Aeon mall. Has anything else popped up to fill the void?

There are indeed, alan, in fact we had a very enjoyable one on Saturday afternoon/evening, around 20 people in all and some nice breads, pate's, cold cuts, cheeses, delicious pasta by the host's wife.
You should come, next time.

Faeries, come take me out of this dull world, For I would ride with you upon the wind, Run on the top of the dishevelled tide, And dance upon the mountains like a flame.
I had breakfast at the new Khema this morning. Excellent eggs benedict.
They confirmed that the wine and cheese evenings have restarted, and take place every Thursday evening at their new location on Pasteur, at the corner of 51 and (I think 212). The cost is $20 plus tax per person.
The new venue is much nicer than the old place at Aeon, which always seemed a bit austere to me.

Must be a loss-leader, no way they can do that for $20 and make any profit.
The one at IHG several years ago for $25 was a loss-leader.

Make sure you call ahead to book a couple of places. They fill up quickly.
Thats a bold statement...english muffin, wilted spinach, shaved smoked ham, perfectly cooked poached eggs and homemade hollandaise? If so I will have to try.scobienz wrote:I had breakfast at the new Khema this morning. Excellent eggs benedict.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

Their scrambled eggs are excellent too. Served in a bowl as they're so creamy you couldn't place them on an even plate.scobienz wrote:I had breakfast at the new Khema this morning. Excellent eggs benedict.

Did you try the wine and cheese thing? If so, how was it?Miguelito wrote:I saw they have a free-flow breakfast of food and fruit juice for $10 (or you pay a la carte). I guess if you're starving one morning this would be a good deal for the quality of food.

I'm glad you asked. I was planning on writing a response, but have been a little busy. In short, it was excellent, and way above my expectations. I didn't really know what to expect, and when I hear "wine and cheese" I have a mental picture of a small cheese buffet, people standing around and mingling, awkwardly trying to balance a plate of cheese and wine in one hand while shoveling some bread into their mouth with the other. Truth be told, I was kind of hoping to stand around and mingle, to meet some new people and inevitably drink too much wine.alanclarke72 wrote:Did you try the wine and cheese thing? If so, how was it?
But, for better or worse, this wine and cheese night is a full sit down dinner, white table cloths, servers wearing ties and black vests, and all.
When I called for the reservation, they asked when we'd like to join, and that it lasts from 6-8. Well, we'll be there around 6 then. We were greeted at the door and led to our table (for two), sat down and had our linen napkins placed on our laps. They asked if we'd like water, she took a bottle of still and I chose a perrier, and then they asked which wine we'd like, red or white. Both were HobNob wines; nothing fancy but it's certainly drinkable, and a cut above standard table wines. The red is a Cab Sav, while the white was a chardonnay.
Then, much to our surprise, a large tray of charcuterie was brought to the table, followed by a smaller plate of warm sausage served with a dijon mustard. It turns out that they make most of the charcuteries in house, including the rillette, terrines gelée, and chorizo, and they also included some imported viand des grisons and jamon (not sure which variety of jamon it was, and as a side note, if you're a huge jamon fan, Doors has jamon iberico right now). Our tray was more than enough for us, but they were certainly willing to bring more if we wanted. We actually saw them walk by with some sauccison at one point, which wasn't on the original tray, so we asked them for just a little and they brought us an entire plate, very thinly sliced, just as it should be. They also delivered warm bread, and it's a tiny detail, but I thought the butter dishes were really cool/classy.
At the buffet table, not only were there several types of cheese to choose from, but also a section of amuse bouches / large canapés (not really sure what category these fall into), which were fresh from the oven and restocked throughout the evening. They included some small toasts with different toppings, and one that sticks in the mind was a phyllo dough filled with melted blue cheese and little piece of ham, I believe. Also included on the table were two salads; a green leaf salad and a marinated carrot salad.
There were also a few dishes of a penne gratiné with a sausage de Toulouse inside.
The cheese included two St Nectaire (different ages/ripeness levels), a creamy blue cheese, and a hard cheese, not sure specifically which one, but similar to a comté.
All in all it was a very classy atmosphere, the service was excellent (they were not shy about refilling your glass, and ours were never empty), and our bill came to $48.40 -- $40 for the "wine and cheese" for two, $4 for the water, and 10% VAT. We'll certainly be coming back, but hopefully with a few more at the table to help with the charcuterie, and after a long afternoon workout so that we're ready for all this food -- it really is a full dinner.
As a side note, there's certainly a heavy French clientele, which comes as no surprise. It was particularly funny, and very French, when a table of four sat behind us. One couple arrived at about 7:15, and then the next couple arrived at 7:30. The guy from the first couple snapped at the woman of the second, saying "we told you 5 PM!" She calmly replied "ok now I'm hungry so I guess we should eat. Right?" He kept on about how they've been waiting an hour (not true). Ahh, the French.

French people at a French venue? That's certainly weird...
Sounds like a good deal. I never went to the Aeon location because it felt weirdly out of place, but I've been to the new location's charcuterie to buy a few goodies. I've have never eaten there though. Usually busy on Thursdays, hopefully I can cram a visit there in the near future.
