I was in Cadillac Bar for lunch recently and there was a loud, chubby 60-ish year old reddish-haired American guy at the bar haranguing the Western owner/manager of Cadillac about not being allowed to smoke. The American kept saying that although it's technically been the law since September 16th that you can't smoke, no bars enforce the ban because it's "political hogwash."
The Cadillac manager said that some bars do enforce the ban, which is why you don't see ash trays at many bars. The American retorted in an animated manner that ash trays were freely available in all bars but they are just kept hidden until you ask for them because there's a $12 fine for having ash trays out.
The loud American then pointed out that he's not even a smoker, he only smokes one cigarette a week, and he smoked in Cadillac just a few days ago, so he should thus be allowed to smoke there in perpetuity. The Cadillac manager stood his ground and said the bar's policy was no smoking (not sure if that's just a daytime rule or at all times).
My favorite part of their exchange was this:
American: "I've been here twenty years."
Cadillac guy: "Well, I've been here seven years."
American: "Well, I've been here twenty years."
The American then said/shouted "September 16th!" and "Political hogwash!" a few more times and went outside to smoke. I enjoyed the rest of my lunch at the bar in a quiet and delightfully smoke free environment.
