Church for Easter
Church for Easter
Will any of you heathen bastards be going to church over the Easter? What are some good (English speaking) churches in Phnom Penh?

In answer to the second question; I've driven past this church on st.598 a few times & generally see a bunch of white folks in & out, so I'd guess it could be a good bet if you don't mind travelling a bit: https://www.google.com/maps/@11.5677291 ... 56!6m1!1e1

Jesus don't let friends skip leg day. Another thing, I pay 60$/mt. for my gym membership. It's really close to where I live, so very convenient. But not very well stocked, and a bit pricey I think. What would the normal going rate be for a gym membership be? (and what is it with Khmer guys going to the gym to play with their phones for hours?)Spigzy wrote:Probably nip in for an hour or so #LegDay

That's a Mormon church. The Catholic one is on Route 5 just past the Chruoy Changva Bridge but I think the services are in French.Spigzy wrote:In answer to the second question; I've driven past this church on st.598 a few times & generally see a bunch of white folks in & out, so I'd guess it could be a good bet if you don't mind travelling a bit: https://www.google.com/maps/@11.5677291 ... 56!6m1!1e1

There have been churches in Cambodia since the Portuguese turned up in the 16th century. Here are a few old ones that I tracked down in 2009, the Sihanoukville one is the only one still used as a place of worship. I've found a few more since. The main reason I was looking for them was because I had often read that only 2 churches survived the wars.Stop tinking so much wrote:But Cambodia is a Buddhist country. How can this be true?

A bit about the cathedral:

And the bells...

This is the original cathedral, in what was known as the Vietnamese Village, just north of the Chruoy Changva bridge. It was demolished during the Pol Pot Regime, it's where the new Catholic Church and a large seminary that has been recently refurbished stand. The new church is a hideous looking thing.
Here's a church in Taom, Siem Reap province. It is back in use as a church after about 40 years of lying empty.

I found quite an interesting old church in Phnom Penh last time i was there.
Head north along riverside up past Wat Phnom over the big concrete bridge (Japanese friendship bridge??) with the permanently damp piss stained steps. Over the bridge making sure not to get run over on the very narrow walkway. Then when you cross the bridge there's a country lane heading north right beside the river. A couple of kms up on that road is a very old looking christian building on the right that can make you gawk if you are not expecting it.

That's the Kiang Khleang Church (The Carmelite Chapel) built in 1919. It's part of an orphanage now and I think it always was one. Probably one of those horrific institutions run by sadistic nuns intent on making life living hell for abandoned bastards. It's run by some organization now and the chapel is just used as a hall.spitthedog wrote:I found quite an interesting old church in Phnom Penh last time i was there.

Wondered about the history of it and it almost looks like it hasn't had a lick of paint since the khmer rouge days, but more interesting for it. Quite an imposing looking building with maybe abit of a spooky feel to it at night i should imagine. Would have liked to have had a walk around the place, but thought it might be abit rude in the end.
