That's not true. Some Cambodians are extremely generous. In fact, perhaps even the most generous that I have come across. They aren't all the same. Maybe it's just the ones in the bars and shops? Or maybe its a simple like or dislike thing.gavinmac wrote:Khmers never give anything free to white people. See discussion here:

Yeah, it's not true. Maybe more true in restaurants, but I have received free things in shops (in lieu of further discount)Mr Lovejuice wrote:That's not true. Some Cambodians are extremely generous. When I travel to the province I often come back with a pile of things that I don't really want but these folk (who are pretty poor already) want to give me a gift.
Often my Khmer friends and acquaintances won't take money from me. Just last week, I was ill and I called a doctor friend - she came round and put in a fluid drip and gave me a stack of medicine. Point blank refused to take money from me.
I suspect it may be kind of 'speculate to accumulate' - she is getting married soon and my family will be invited. I suspect I will more than pay for the cost of the medicine with my marriage gift.
Locals do operate on a system of favours - it's always useful to have someone who 'owes you one' that can be called in at some stage in the future.

I've noticed the Khmers (and Thais) in lower and middle-income bracket are very generous, they always share food and stuff with each other, and the guys in my street always invite me over for nosh and a beer when there is a party.
Generally, when they get higher up, the hand starts to tighten, for example, a Chinese-Khmer school owner charging expats (and Khmers) $5 for an ID card,/ making them pay for their board-markers, ink for same, teacher's books, etc.
Many security companies usually charge employees for uniforms, and those guys/dolls earn a pittance, shameful.

Disclaimer:Reading Khminglish can cause a persistent and seriously disturbed perception of reality...
People often behave differently in different situations. Your generous neighbours could be tight as hell at work, and your dreadfully mean boss is probably more generous in a social setting.vladimir wrote:Generally, when they get higher up, the hand starts to tighten, for example, a Chinese-Khmer school owner charging expats (and Khmers) $5 for an ID card,/ making them pay for their board-markers, ink for same, teacher's books, etc.

I ordered a takeaway delivery last week from place just 5 minutes moto ride from my apartment. I've eaten in at the place many times and they are rarely busy, and this was a sunday mid-afternoon so probably the least busiest time of the week for them. The food at this place is already cooked in the morning, not prepared for each individual order.
After 45 minutes wait I thought "I'll give them an hour" as I was getting hungry and plan B was to cook something at home.
After 1 hour 15 mins passed I started cooking.
Then 1 hr 45 mins after ordering, the delivery guy turns up at my place with a bag of food and asked for the cash. I told him that I had ordered so long ago I just assumed the owner had died or sold the business, and he smiled and left.
Then an hour or two later I get the owner calling me to give me an earful.
If they can't deliver within an hour the order is cancelled as far as I'm concerned.

Yet another reason I got out of the bar business.Playboy wrote:You mean to say that you do not get back rubs and massages when you go out for a drink ?spitthedog wrote:Christ Almighty, you colonials now want free drinks in 3rd world sh!tholes?
