Excellent review.

Rob did admit you got him good.. I was so proud when he said you actually punched him. Respect. But in others news.... What time is her curfew...?

Funny, my wife went to Armands last night, and for all of the reasons you stated I opted against joining. Thanks for this review, and I'll be sure to do the same and suggest here next time Armands is mentioned.scobienz wrote:Mrs S and I were on the look-out for a reasonably priced but quality restaurant last night - we would usually go to Armands but, frankly, we're both bored of the one trick pony menu, lack of flexibility on sides and petty developments like stopping the free brandy which, let's face it, likely costs him 50 cents a glass.

Probably because most folk - given half the chance - are thieving cunts.scobienz wrote:
One small gripe, and it's not only this place, but a common theme I've noticed recently, including in Django recently. In a country with such great pepper and salt so each and accessible, why do so many decent restaurants insists on using crappy salt and pepper shakers, similar to those our grannies kept on the dinner table. What's wrong with grinders?
Anyway, a small point. All in all well worth a second visit, and one to be added to the list of staples.
Good review. The sausage looks in dire need of some gravy.
They have another sausage dish which is served with a tomato sauce. I'm not sure why the one I chose doesn't have a gravy - perhaps something to do with authenticity. I dunno; I'm a heathen perhaps, but an onion gravy or red wine sauce on the side would have made it a 9/10 dish. The Window Licker wrote:

I've eaten there several times, as much for the reasonable prices and friendly service as the food. The beef fillets are kind of local, but still okay. I've tried all of the sausage dishes and enjoyed them all. Haven't tried the 'call in advance' casserole yet, but I am told it's very good. The house wines are always more than acceptable, and the owner makes some pretty good suggestions. Getting a bit tired of the same fried potatoes with everything. The proprietor has to be the friendliest frog restauranteur in Phnom Penh, which is also part of the draw.

Not sure why the frog restauranteurs get a bad rap here. Pretty much all the ones I've met were extremely friendly, especially if you speak French. Them not being overly open to others is often in large part due to their lack of confidence in English. Plus, like the Brits and Russians, they do tend to stick to their own kind.LTO wrote:I've eaten there several times, as much for the reasonable prices and friendly service as the food. I've noticed that for a 1st world country in Europe, the French lack English skills. Most Flippers have em beat. Not a bad thing. So yeah, the French DO stick together but like said above, it is their lack of English rather than prejudice. IMHO

Been there several times, always very good and friendly host. I see he's trying to sell the place, won't be the same without him though. Le St Georges is several notches better the Chez Gaston, which is also for sale.
Chez Gaston is ok but it looks shabby to me whereas this plays has an element of class about it. A poster was asking me for a recommendation recently for a high end place that didn't break the bank like La Residence and Armand's. LSG fits that profile perfectly. I'm sorry ringers he is looking to sell. He's got a good place there.
I don't find Chez Gaston shabby. It's a bistro and it's exactly the way an authentic bistro should be.
