Tartar sauce is commonly served with batter fried fish in the States. I don't remember every seeing it when I was in Streatham... just malt vinegar and salt.Jamie_Lambo wrote:i thought Tartar sauce was usually served with scampi

Ahh the dentists favourite sauce.
My posts are just jokes, maybe they're rude, offensive, and politically incorrect. They're not my opinion, viewpoint, idea, or judgement, but they're just fucking jokes so lighten up.
Best fish and chips are from NZ full stop --- fish caught in cold, nutrient rich water and sustainable management.
Usually cooked by Greeks but Viet/Chinese migrants taking them over.
Best meal ever --- a dozen or two fried Bluff Oysters ( similar to Belon ) with salt and lemon
You cant beat that - English f&c have a backbone in them ffs - left over spines after the toffs eat the filets

Are you sure about that? Most decent-sized portions of fish are likely to have vertebrae and ribs in them.Jamie_Lambo wrote:where the fuck was you buying your fish and chips? ive never had a backbone in my fish?!kgbagent wrote:English f&c have a backbone in them ffs - left over spines after the toffs eat the filets

Up in the north is pretty much the only place where you will reliably find fish and chip shops that routinely use the finest fish and chip medium known to mortal man - beef dripping.NO JOKE DAVE wrote:Fish and chip accompaniments change as you go up the country. Southerners keep it simple; plain or with a bit of ketchup/tartare. Midlanders add curry sauce and mushy peas. Northern monkeys spoil it with gravy and the sweaties eat everything.
Best fish and chips to be found in Cornwall or on the east/n.east coast.
Nothing in Phnom Penh, or in Asia, comes close to a decent British chippie.
Case closed.
One place I have used quite a lot serves up mushy peas, bread and butter, nice strong tea and a bowl of sliced onions in vinegar you can lade your plate with to go with the fish and chips. All served on a nice, warm, clear Pyrex plate. If only they would use that beef dripping they would be the perfect chippy.
Tartare sauce has its place, I suppose, but I think it goes better with non-battered things. Stuff in breadcrumbs, such as scampi, or maybe in a tempura batter. Certainly not a beer batter fried in dripping.

I tried the Fish and Chips at Three Mangoes as well, and can't say I'm too impressed. Then again, I'm never really impressed by what the English call food. Fish was mushy as others have mentioned, which was a bit disappointing. I also don't really get the mushy peas. Sounds like what peasants would eat 800 years ago. One thing I will say is that the portions are quite large. The chips also need to come with something other than ketchup. Eating those thick potato slices requires something. At least at La Patate they have different sauces you can enjoy the fries with. Let's face it, potatoes taste bland to anyone besides the English and Irish.
Anyways, the food at 3 Mangoes is pretty good overall, and the Fish and Chips wasn't disgusting or anything, but I don't know why anyone would call them the best in town (unless the rest of the city's offerings are actually worse than this). It just confirms anyone's belief in the English having terrible cuisine. Just like having some English guy with messed up teeth telling the rest of us about modern advancements in English dentistry and to quit the jokes. Not exactly convincing.

It's nigh on an affront to human rights that there still isn't a decent British pub in this town.
