Not a restaurant.
But a reasonably fun experience.
Head out to Kien Svay on a Tuktuk. Probably about 45 min journey. Chill out on a hammock, play cards, listen to music, take a boat ride.
Stroll thought the food market and order your food and buy a few pieces of the weirder things to try.
Can easily spend 4 hours plus there (not including travelling) if you factor in a post lunch and beer nap on the hammock.
There is an old guy there who makes sugar confectionary. He pulls and twists it into any shape you want - he has great personality and is great fun to banter with him and try to come up with something that he can't create.
I ended up buying half a dozen things I didn't want but it was well worth the 5 bucks.

You have to give him a break. My post was difficult to understand with all it's grammar and spelling and punctuation and stuff.

Can't imagine why personally.
In the dark, no one knows who farted.
True that. But the blame always seems to find its way back to me.
Not surprising with a name like that!

Damn, I screwed up a reply.

Thanks for the (mostly all) interesting suggestions, especially those out of town places. We've been to Sovanna's BBQ several times, not delicate but fun. I've read here about Mama's NY Deli, Casablanca and Deli Bistro Gourmet - maybe affordable at lunch. Is that neighbourhood I mentioned worth an hour or an afternoon?

Sorry about those beer-fuelled "Thaivisa" and "English Teacher" responses - don't feel that way at all.

Hey - a new question. I'm Battambang bound, first time in 15 years. I had great times at a beer garden where stone-faced singers did western hits and were rewarded with recycled bouquets and at a restaurant with a wild menu of jungle food cooked every way possible. But I can't remember names or locations.

Any tips on a Battambang chill place to stay for $35 or less. In 2002 it was a lot less, haha.

Cheers.

FYI, Mama's NY Deli has moved recently, from BKK1 to Toul Tompoung. It's now on St 123, just south of 460. Still has good food and the same irrepressible Khnew York Mama.

I've really only gone looking for Khmer places a couple of times (too caught up in French, Italian, Chinese and veddy trendy coffee shops - can't get 'em in Thailand) but did find a great place on St. 63 just south of St. 158. Nice people and there is no pressure to order the ox penis with red ants or spicy sauce.

Tonight we're off to St. 108 near the river where there's a strip of Khmer BBQ places that looked like fun. You guys know all this but I'm just a lowly tourist. At the end of the trip we'll hang out in BKK1 and around Russian market: Sovana BBQ, Java cafe, Luigi's, Pizza House, Il Forno and a couple of Malaysian/Indo places (ever tried Thai pizza? don't have to bring your own condiments - they supply the ketchup).

Cheers, and thanks.
