Americans get screwed over with regards to overseas bank accounts and income.

When I opened an account at Canadia the woman got a load of extra paperwork out and told me my government required me to fill it in. I was a bit confused because it was obviously for USA citizens. Then a senior chick took them away and telling the dopey bird it was only for "America".

It's like having a Swiss/Cayman bank account to hide my illegally gained millions. :-)

Maybe because it was Friday and lots of people were getting money for the weekend. Can you remember which day you used it mid month?

This. I will never understand why expats (as if they were tourists) keep using their foreign ATM cards.

Because all my income is deposited in the US where I have zero fees and banking protection, unlike here when they strangle your account with hidden fees and my government automatically assumes I am a terrorist or drug dealer. Also, until recently, I was forbidden to have foreign bank accounts being a government type, so now it is more out of habit. Old dog and all that.

I opened an account in the Florida Keys with cash, the bank manager sniffed the money. I asked what the hell? She replied, we are required to smell the cash in case it has been buried. Of course, her bank was built with drug smuggling money.

How would sniffing it make her know if it's been buried or not?
What does that even mean?

Dollars do have a unique smell though. Kind of musty gramps pants smell.

For years I only used my Canadian card as I have free unlimited withdraws worldwide with my main account. Up until recently when Canadia Bank added a withdraw fee it was free to withdraw money from any Canadia ATM. I figured that was easier and obviously cheaper than doing wire transfers and paying for two accounts. But now there are withdraw fees for almost every machine I might open a local account as I find myself usually using ABA machines and getting dinged 4 - 6 dollars every time.

Could you expand on that? Zillions of American gov't employees work overseas in embassies, international aid, military bases, etc. Are non of them allowed to use local banks?

Well, I wasn't allowed, I cannot speak for millions. And perhaps the rules changed at some point but the paperwork was annoying so I never bothered.

I'm a fan of ABA, but their fees for receiving inbound transfers seem rather high. I closed my anz account recently, but am considering opening another one with them just for the purpose of receiving overseas payments. I will be doing it grudgingly.

I am one of the old guard, having never in all my live used credit / debit cards nor ATM cards to withdraw money. If I need dollares, I ask my wife and in general she is my willing finance minister.
Of course nowadays I am not changing this beautiful working arrangement.

That's weird, I've been using cards for over 30 years. How do you manage that?

I never knew any of them did. Until last night, when I took $99 out of a BIDC ATM in front of the orange pharmacy on St. 51 at St. 282. Nice.
