I decided to go out near the quay. I went into a seemingly quiet bar with only two girls where I could actually converse. I found a weary-looking lass from kompong jam and we chatted after a while. Finally as the night gets long, she asks me can I ask bong one (question) or not (សូមសួរមួយមើលបានទេ). She asks if I have a gf. I turned the question around and ask if she has a bf. She says yes and pulls out her phone and shows me tons of pictures of this dude who apparently works in the States and visits her twice a year for 3-4 weeks. Wtf I said to her. But she just said need money.
Kind of depressing. She was down to go somewhere but I declined.

Kind of off-putting if you had designs on her but hardly depressing.merchantsmutual wrote:I decided to go out near the quay. At least she has some hope, she can't depend on passersby.
What I find a lot more depressing is getting the background from these women.
Invariably it involves a very deprived background and abusive or absent/ deceased parents,
and nearly always a short abusive marriage which results in the husband abandoning her and their child to abject poverty.
That's when a job in a shady establishment starts looking like the only option. Sometimes it works out well for these women,
other times not, but alternatives to make more than the minimum wage are very limited for those without good education, connections and standing.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I just don't get the guys that go for the prostitutes at these bars. The reason why the girls do it is already a downer and the number of fluids they share with countless aged sexpats is fucking disgusting.Lucky Lucan wrote:

Desperation or drunkenness? Both?
Youngwill and the rest that profit from other people's pain deserve to rot. I will not cease in my efforts to shut these fuckers down and be rid of the remaining destitutes and sexpats from Cambodia.

LL hits the nail on the head. This scenario is extremely common with bargirls. Though usually their first job after being deserted is at a garment factory. The long hours and monotonous work gets to be too much after a while and a friend of theirs who already works as a hostess in a bar suggests they try that.Lucky Lucan wrote:Kind of off-putting if you had designs on her but hardly depressing.merchantsmutual wrote:I decided to go out near the quay. I'd guess their average stay in a bar is about a year. They learn some English and usually earn enough money to send a decent amount back to their children and family back in the province. The prettier ones get sponsored by a foreigner (or multiple guys!) and stop work. The rest either leave and start a tiny business somewhere, or move to another bar, or move back to work in the provinces. As LL says, long term options for these girls are limited, especially as about 35% are illiterate in Khmer.

So it was sometime in 2005. I had just arrived back in town. I always stayed at the same place on 172, had the same moto driver and tuktuk pilot. It was a good spot to explore the city.
Slept in and behaved the first day, second evening i met a Khmer mate in Shanghai. We had a feed and several beers, chatted up the ladies. He took off home, i was going to stay for one more.
During that one last beer, the dame that was beside me was becoming more and more concerned, something was up. About 5 minutes later, the police showed up, much talking and the party was over.. everyone had to go. This was about 8 pm.
She asked me if i could ride a moto, i said yes and we took off. Stopped at a shop, picked up a few things, went back to her place where we spent the next 3 nights sequestered. She would whistle at the 'security' kid on his moto, he would come up the stairs, take orders and cash and come back with food beer etc... her and her roommate treated me like a king, never asked for anything.
3 nights later, mid afternoon i returned
back to 172, the family than ran the hotel were very nice and concerned about my whereabouts and safety for the past several days.
Good times.
Wanted to share....

What efforts are you putting forward in stopping it?GMJS-440 wrote:...

I know lots of westerners in the bar girl industry, more than I'd like too probably and have had offers to be involved in ownership ect but not a chance I'd want to be involved in that shit business wise... I have just always figured that eventually the guillotine will drop on foreign run hostess bars that also profit from prostitution.

^^ he's writing about it on expat internet forums whilst shaking his fist.
GMJS-440 seems such a killjoy, perhaps he needs to go down 104 and get a root before his head explodes. Didn't he also claim that the recent enforcement of the visa/work permit was down to him.......

GMJS,
Please wait while I get you a soap box to stand upon .
A tambourine to make noise with.
And a bible to beat people who view thing differently to you about the head with.
FFS - You sound like that Trump guy who wants to impose his "View" of the world onto the rest of the world.
Question- Are you just going to try to shut down businesses that have a non Khmer owner/partner or are you going after the Khmer owned places as well.
More than happy to discuss this with you online.
Footnote:
I neither support or reject this form or income support.
It's been around for thousands of years in all cultures.

Its not a story from a hostess bar, but about a freelancer on Riverside.
I was sitting in the wall and a nice girl came almost running to me and was strait to the point: Mister you like to made boom boom with me? 15 Dollar.
Before I could answer her pimp pushed her beside and said: Mister if you want to do business with her, you have to talk with me. OK, no problem, how much? 10 Dollar. I took the girl to my hotel room and had a excellent time. When she left, I asked her why she said 15 and her pimp 10 Dollar?
Simple she said, my pimp takes all the money and now I have 5 Dollar in my pocket. Because the good time I had with her, I gave her $10 tip.
