You typically get 5 glasses to a bottle with a full pour, so $15 for a $2 glass doesn't make sense.Machiavelli wrote:I splurged the other day and bought a bottle with dinner: $15 at the restaurant, otherwise $2 a glass.
I found the same wine at the grocery store for $7.95 which is typical margins.
It was a pretty good cab Say, possess my tests and enjoyable enough. Im wondering, what is the best value for money red in the Kingdom?

At my regular dinner haunt the other night I had a good Haut-Médoc for $25 a bottle. Usually I get a good Bordeaux Superior for between $17 and $20 which I consider good value for this wine, especially when it is served at the correct temperature in a good environment. Buying to take home I probably pay between $10 and $15 a bottle, maybe more depending on vintage.Miguelito wrote:You typically get 5 glasses to a bottle with a full pour, so $15 for a $2 glass doesn't make sense.Machiavelli wrote:I splurged the other day and bought a bottle with dinner: $15 at the restaurant, otherwise $2 a glass.

. Good catch, I obviously forgot the price per glass, but the bottle was $15, haha. Maybe it was $6 per glass that seems more correct.Miguelito wrote:You typically get 5 glasses to a bottle with a full pour, so $15 for a $2 glass doesn't make sense.Machiavelli wrote:I splurged the other day and bought a bottle with dinner: $15 at the restaurant, otherwise $2 a glass.

Some good info here, thanks.
I'm aware of Meo Deon's dinner spot, and they do have a good selection of claret. But I was thinking more everyday / family friendly places. the kind of place one might sit outside for a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon (preferably with low risk of seeing the proprietor rolling around drunk in his underpants).
I've discovered a couple myself recently:
Velkommen - $12 per bottle (I think it's Villa Maopo or something like that. Not great, but just about drinkable)
Country Club - $13.50 after membership discount - a pretty decent Chardonnay
Urban Space - $15 per litre bottle - Grand Sud - pretty acceptable drop, very good for the price anyway
More suggestions welcome.

But do you? I ordered a glass at the country club last weekend, and was brought little more than a couple of sips. I politely pointed this out when ordering my second, they apologised and almost filled the glass to the top. I think this inconsistency is more typical. Hence my reason for preferring to buy the bottle and my starting this thread.Miguelito wrote:You typically get 5 glasses to a bottle with a full pour, so $15 for a $2 glass doesn't make sense.Machiavelli wrote:I splurged the other day and bought a bottle with dinner: $15 at the restaurant, otherwise $2 a glass.

Best one I saw was a friend ordered a gin and tonic, she got a full glass of gin (with ice of course) and a can of tonic.
She scooped out the ice and the drink lasted her half the night.

Best value I've found (repeatedly) is the old Heng Dy Drinks shop in Kampot. Very good vintage Bordeau's for $6 - $7 a bottle ...ssssshhhhhhh
What lifestyle changes have you made apart from finding it necessary to consume wine by the bottle? I'm assuming you have become more not less depraved in other ways too.slavedog wrote:I'm drinking less and less beer these days - one of a series of lifestyle changes

I guess I was speaking more generally. If I'm at Meo Den's dinner spot, for example, or a place like it, that is the formula I would take into consideration. But at a random bar by the riverfront, yea, I could see there being an inconsistency. Another advantage if you're at a place that probably sells a lot more beer than wine, is that you don't want to order a glass and have it been from an already opened bottle from a day or two ago.slavedog wrote:But do you? Do you still stop by the Empire at all? They have a few wines by the bottle - you could also head upstairs for a movie with your bottle in tow!
I quite like getting a bottle of Gris Blanc in the afternoon / early evening. Some of the French places have it, including Oskar and Chez Flo. You could head to Chez Flo with the kids - get a bottle there and get pizza from next door (Luigis) as well. (The Gris Blanc you can find at Warehouse for $10.50 I think; Chez Flo has some rose nights (Tuesdays perhaps, I forget) and it's $19 there, which isn't bad.)
Do you ever go to Est? A different vibe than the others, but I could see you enjoying passing an evening there with some of the regulars at the bar.
