A question for owners of small bars - Do you need a work permit?
A question for owners of small bars - Do you need a work permit?
From my understanding people with a registered business and paying taxes don't need a work permit. I'm guessing most small bars don't go to the trouble of registering at the government level, only the local level.
So my question is will you register so as to avoid the need for a work permit or will you try to find a way around it?

Incorrect, foreign business owners are required to have WPs.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
And presumably you have to do both the employer, and the employee side.
So i want to open a bar or restaurant with a bunch of mates, we all either have WP's with our "day jobs", TEFLers, mechanics, lawyers, captialist's, freelancers, gigolo's etc etc or otherwise retired (no WP).PSD_Kiwi wrote:Incorrect, foreign business owners are required to have WPs.
Do we need further WPs or is the WP at individual level rather than the business?
Only if they work in the company/want to stay in Cambodia. If you just own the company and live abroad a WP is not a requirement for opening a business. The WP is necessary if you want to have a long term visa trough your company regardless if you work for it or not, but if you are spending only some time in Cambodia you can run your business without any work permit and just use other visas when you come to visit your business. So it depends on the client specific situation, some business owners might have a courtesy visa and own part of a business yet if they do not work for the business the work permit is not required especially if they only spent few months of the year in Cambodia.PSD_Kiwi wrote:Incorrect, foreign business owners are required to have WPs.

Haha, I see a few. They just come in before closing to check out the tills and scratching their balls when the rent and salary are due.
How the fuck you gonna make profit selling 75 cents draft and not selling food other than the instant Mama noodle cups and expect to even break let alone profit with the $1000 a month plus on rent, nevermind the staff salaries.
Plenty of them and they are continually replaced, and if you can save the $100 WP fee, you might have a better chance of turning a dividend.YaTingPom wrote:What idiot owns a bar but doesn’t physically run it?

Because you can run several small ones. And you know the profits? Well they are numbers and they can be added together to make a bigger number.Master Donut Baker wrote:if you can't make from 5000 to 10000 amonth why bother run a biz ?
Also, you might not be in business wanting to make obscene amounts of money (sure there are other threads on this phenomena), you may want to provide some employment to the local population, get some satisfaction in passing on skills that you have honed over your lifetime, you might be socially inept so need the company or you could just be retarded.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:Because you can run several small ones. James Dumar is doing it to put something back, teaching beekeeping.
He's not making much out of it, but few of us have done so much to visibly help poor, uneducated people learn self-sufficiency and a sustainable business model.
