Flying with baby
Any (useful/non obvious) advice for a first flight home with an infant? I’m sure a lot of you have some experience in this...

How long is the flight?FatherTime wrote:Any (useful/non obvious) advice for a first flight home with an infant? I’m sure a lot of you have some experience in this...
If you have a pretty active kid, like my daughter, check with your GP for some mild sedative, for the sanity of passengers and parents both.
Do not forget the favorite plushy/cuddly toy.
Depending on the size of the baby, ask for a front row seat and baby bin.
Have lots of alcohol handy.

How old? if old enough, simple boiled sweets/lollipop do well for the take off & landing part where their ears struggle to readjust. It's hard to tell them to swallow when they don't have anything in their mouth, so a boiled sweet forces that reaction naturally. If they are still young then don't forget to pack nappies/sacks/wet wipes - you won't be able to access the toilet at will and they won't wait. I even slapped a nappy on my 4yr old for a long haul flight, just in case he couldn't hold it in whilst the women create their usual queue.

Put a diaper and use a mild sedative and hire a courier like DHL for guaranteed peace of mind. Unbox then change diaper and feed after delivery.
Assuming it's a long haul flight, request seats in the center rows of the plane. The small walls separating the cabins can be used for baby-bed-attachment and are invaluable. Sometimes these walls are also present on the window side of of the plane, but not always.
Make sure you have something for the baby to suck on, preferably a breast, especially during descent. I wouldn't recommend candy... Bring some toys for the moments the baby is awake, but just like home most of the time the baby will be sleeping in the crib. Sedating your baby for the convenience of the passengers next to you also seems a bad idea.
Also bring baby food, not all airlines provide baby food.
And prepare your paperwork. I once nearly got stock in Moscow because I couldn't present a copy of the birth certificate or other proof the kid was mine.

Sounds like parenting advice from the year 1782 or something. "For a broken leg, apply a mustard poultice with boiled rhubarb root on the leg, put some sarsaparilla leaves under the patient's pillow and bleed them twice daily."gavinmac wrote:What the hell are boiled sweets?Spigzy wrote:How old? if old enough, simple boiled sweets/lollipop do well for the take off & landing part where their ears struggle to readjust. Ah, we would just say hard candy in the USA. This leaves us with the Alexandra mystery. If Alexandra flies from Cambodia to Paris, does he/she first buy a $15 box of diapers and pay $200 to send those diapers to his/her Paris hotel so that they are there on arrival? None of this parenting stuff makes sense to me.
