I believe the timelines support my assertion. The popularity and success of Larry's killed off all these places.
I don't believe those bars you mentioned had the same clientele as Larry's. Cavern did British style food and the kitchen closed because it was taking too much effort and making little profit. Garage wasn't particularly known for food other than the odd sandwich/ burger cooked outside. Lonestar and Freebird were in quite different areas too. Freebird was sold because the owner had serious health problems if I remember correctly.
It was Greg's influence that kept the repeat customers coming back. Garage and JM were one entity. Take JM out of the equation and you had just another (tiny) hole in the wall.
I think this was far more important than anything about Larry's.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I'd say the general "clientele" for all four was the same as Larry's clientele, namely "middle aged white English speakers who enjoy a few beers and a Western meal before going to hostess bars later at night."
Lonestar was the only one I would frequent for drinks, didn’t get the feel that other customers were going out to get whores but I was an early drinker so maybe it got a different crowd at night.
Freebird was for food more than drinks. Garage I only went one time.
Larry’s is the only one that meets gavinmacs description.

I'd say you're wrong, Larry's was the only one that seemed like that, it even has (maybe retired)tattooed bar girls.

I remember the Marines (US embassy guards) frequenting Freebird back in the day when Paul owned it. I liked it there because it had air conditioning...
Three pages of text, and no one is curious why Gavinmac started this thread, from his home in the U.S.? I presume he doesn’t have any immediate plans to come back for a visit, so why does he care where or when Freebird moved a bit years ago?

What’s up GM?
Stuck in the USA, there are no live sports on TV, they are showing old football and baseball games. And the team websites are similarly doing nostalgic features.
Dallascowboys.com did a retrospective on the 64 greatest plays in Cowboys history and I found myself looking to see if the phantom TD pass from Vinny Testaverde to Keyshawn Johnson during the Cowboys wild comeback win over Seattle in 2004 was on the list (it wasn't).
I remember watching that game live at the "old" Freebird.. It might have been the only time I visited the old Freebird.
That's why the old Freebird was on my mind, and then I wondered if it moved or just totally renovated the original location. I think Playboy is right that it's still in the same place, but I'd feel better if Felgerkarb settled this.
I hope you get some new FOIA requests in sometime soon to help with the boredom. I if I remember correctly, you mentioned having one last "7 reasons" up the sleeve...

I am right, and I am sure that Felgerkarb will back me up on this once he has pumped his morning 3 tons of iron.
What might be confusing your memory is that the origanal FreeBird had no front door, or front wall. It was a walk-in shop house that had a metal shutter that they rolled down to lock it up at night. Originally it did not have aircon, or much of a food menu. It also had a table football just on the right as you walked in (you Americans call it fooseball or something silly).

His Lordship is correct.
And I found it better after the changes myself. Before it was a rat hole and there were already plenty of those back in the day...but, to each their own.
