I saw a very big butterfly today. Maybe not clear from the pictures, but about the size of a pigeon or so. That's all.

That's an Atlas moth - very big!! I used to occasionally see them at dusk amongst the rubber tree plantations in north Phuket some years ago. Beautiful insects
oh. What an odd insect. Wikipedia says it has no mouth and never eats. After coming out of the cocoon, it lives just for a short time. Long enough to mate.simon43-1 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 10, 2020 1:52 pmThat's an Atlas moth - very big!! what purpose do they serve, I wonder. I guess large birds eat them. Beautiful, but imagine not eating and only mating. Why be so beautiful just to provide food for other creatures? rhetorical question and idle wondering.Rune wrote: ↑Thu Sep 10, 2020 2:06 pmoh. What an odd insect. I saw something similar years ago but I’m not sure if it’s the same breed. Big drain pipe for scale...
Some Atlas moths fly to Europe (well, Turkey) and back.
The caterpillars are scary.

I was had a big moth in my living room, scared the shit out of me. Was probably about 0.6 pigeons in size.

They are not the butterflies. They are moths and it's a bit strange. I always thought a moth is a small and disgusting insect, which makes everyone annoyed, but now it seems to me they are beautiful.
